I was wondering your opinions on tilt cabs and if its absolutely essential we get one with a tilt cab. I know its easier for servicing and stuff, but money wise - is it really more expensive? Does anyone have a lorry without a tilt cab? What are your experiences?

Fankyou!

I have a lorry without a tilt cab !!!
And the mechanic has never had any problems with accsess (sp)
So no I don't think they are essential

Mine doesn't have a tilt cab and I think its a fairly recent thing for the 'posh' lorries to have them! My mechanic grumbles but he's used to servicing them so I think he just does it for attention!!!

My mechanic grumbles a bit about mine not having one but so very few actualy have them that he isnt to bothered to be honest.

Alot of mechanics do moan about non-tilting cabs, especially the mobile mechanics who travel to you to do servicing. We recently had a major problem that entailed going to an Iveco dealership to get it sorted. They moaned and said that as it doesn't tilt it would be more difficult for them, take more time and cost more etc etc.

But they got the job done so can't have been that bad! Might be worth finding out who services lorries in your area and then asking them if it's a problem. Some people specialise in horse lorries (obviously masochist mechanics!) so won't whinge quite as much.

i had a non tilt leyland before my MAN...

The labour costs for the non tilt were double than those of the MAN.

It makes sense to try and get a tilt, as easier access means less time for the mechanics!!!

Our mechanic if fine, he is a commercial vehicle specilasit and does a lot of contract work for delivery lorries too, that are non tilting. no porblme when our new one was non tilt
I see you are Northamptonshire- if not very North of Northants, .ts not toooooooo far for you to get to P A Commercials of Wolverton who are excellent, reliable and fairly well priced for serving and repairs.

I would always go for a tilt cab because if there is a breakdown on the road then it is alot easier for the breakdown mechanics to access the parts they need to get to and resolve the problem. Access to the engine is also far better with a tit cab. If there is no tilt cab then the only way to get access to the engine is to remove all the parts from underneath it and drop it down. This is a very long job and makes the repair almost uneconomical.

we have a merc and we dont have tilt cab. However, access if under passenger seats which is purpose built (just comes up when you switch levers) and above engine where the luton is also comes up, all very easy to do and takes a matter of 30 seconds. I have also had lorry without tilt and was no major issue. Some mechanics hate non tilt, some are fine with it.

Makes them much easier to work on but as others say depends on your mechanic and of course what they are need to work on under the lorry.

I'd never buy one without in case I needed any bigger jobs doing on one.
