Are there many around? I don't want a 3.5 as it won't have the payload I need as I want the ability to have 2 ponies or a horse and a pony and not worry about the weight and we want a little bit of living. However, I don't want a huge lorry since quite often we will just have one pony up and I don't want to drive a big lorry unnecessarily.

So i reckon it looks like I need a 5 or 6 tonne lorry for 2 horses/ponies.

However, all I can see is 3.5 or 7.5. Am I looking in the wrong places or just being dim. I have a decentish budget, i think, but everything seems too big or too small.

someone on here was talking about the VW lt50 (think that was the name) which is apparently a 5t VW one. looks more like a van than a lorry.

you can also get small 7.5tonne ones. some of the old bedfords are small and compact.. however, i've heard parts can be hard to get hold of... in fact, if you search through my posts, you'll see one where i was asking lorry/money advice (today) and i *think* a couple of members on here said they were selling smallish lorries...

If you are in South-East I can recommend McNeills horseboxes of Alton, Hampshire - I bought my lovely 6.6t from them and another person on my yard also has one very similar and we both love them. Both have mini-living and take two good size 16.2hh. They seem really honest - I have had nothing seriously wrong (touch wood) with mine for 3 years just a leaking diesel pipe but things do wear out and mine was not a new build.

Happy box hunting

Ive got an old Renault Dodge 6.5 tonne, which has over 2 and a half tonne payload. Its only 19 foot long in total, and has an oven, grill and sink and a bed over the luton. Ive stayed quite happily in there over weekends. Mine was originally from priory stud horseboxes in Essex.

My Leyland DAF Roadrunner was from Priory Horseboxes too

I travelled from Leics to buy it, had it 5 years and only just had the brakes done, everything else is brill.

Can carry 2 large horses/three ponies and has payload of nearly 3 tonne!
Large living, but very very easy to drive .

Echo PeterNatt, we have had our Bedford for 3 years and never had any trouble getting parts.
And also echo those who have had nice smaller lorries from Priory Stud, friend of mine has a LOVELY priory 5.5t lorry, perfect for her as she has a 15hh and her daughters pony. Living compact but good. Very nice - but wasn't cheap! But then was very new!!

I have 5t LT50 VW, it doesnt look at all like a van lol, its 23ft long lol!!

Definately a little lorry rather than van, payload is fab, Peper Harrow are good, bit pricey but you will get a solid relaible box and after sales service. You pay for what you get.

Just to add Peper Harow boxes are v similar to McNeills boxes because it is run by the son and ex-wife of Ian McNeill. And Mine is a Merc 709D - 6.6t - see UPS delivery large van type and my mechanic always tells me what a great little lorry it is and how they go on forever.

p.s. I don't work for McNeills PR dept. - I just love my box.
