What does everyone think about the external tack lockers that approach into the horse area. We have just bought a horsebox with this and are wondering whether to take it out. We have two big horses one is 16hh and the other is 16.3hh. It seems quite tight inside.

All opinions would help as we would like it to be as safe as possible.

Thank you :)

I don't like them personally, my last one was cut out of the living area. However, zillions of boxes are built like that and folk don't have a problem. I guess it's what the horses get used to.

We have a horsebox without tack lockers in the horse area. We have a 16h1" & a 16h2" who we travel. We can fishbone the partitions & that way they have plenty of length so they travel comfortably. Our headroom is around 7'6" so headroom isn't an issue.

We travelled the 16h2" in a friends fancy Lehel lorry with another horse. The lorry has tack lockers which are in the horse area & to be honest they invade the horse's space alot. Our horse didn't travel well, was performing all the way to the venue. The length he had to travel in was alot shorter than he's used to. We never have this problem in our lorry. By choice I wouldn't have tack lockers into the horse area.

I have a friend who used to have youngsters & they wouldn't have tack lockers into the horse area either. They found that the youngsters tended to climb up onto the top of the lockers & injure them selves.

The decision is yours, but I'd remove them. It's alot of bother to go through but I think your horses will travel better & safer. :)

Don't like them. Horses can get legs on top of them, you can't get through past the horses if you need to and, as poster above, I feel they take up a lot of room that I'd rather my horse had.

We had a small tack locker put in to our lorry in the living area. It is accessible externally and it goes under the seating inside. It is not huge but fits 2 saddles in

we hadn't any issues with ours until we bought Beau - he's so long that he ends up squished unless we herringbone the partitions.
The new lorry will have the tack locker in the end stall only - the plan is to not use it unless we have to. Our smaller horses (16.2 and 16.3) will fit with room to spare but they're nice and compact.
