I'm planning a trip to Ireland to go horse shopping but...really don't know where to start! I'm sure some of you have done this before.
Did you just contact the bigger stables to show you around, or scout adds when you're there ?

I will have any horse vetted, but any places people I must check out (or avoid) ?

I am looking for an IDx so any good places to go to ?

Age you are looking for? Start with donedeal, loads of rubbish on there but if you have a decent eye you can find a few gems. If you are looking for younger stock look up ID stallions and the studs that stand ones you like. If you have an idea of what part of Ireland you are headed, I'm sure people could give you a better idea of smaller studs and dealers in the more local area.

Jim Derwin in athelone (sorry of incorrect spelling!) has literally hundreds of horses, he seems to specialise in hunters and show jumpers although I've bought happy hackers off him too. I would make an appointment, I don't have his number anymore but he's on Facebook. I like him because he doesn't try to hard sell you a horse, he doesn't need to!

A friend of mine goes regularly and travels all over the place looking at horses. Most of them are completely the opposite as described but she usually gets what she wants in the end :)

I have no plan as to which part of Ireland is best to start looking :) (also open for tips here!)
Looking for a middleweight, at least 16.3/17hh up to 7yrs old mostly for hacking (sane and sensible) fun rides and maybe low level competition a couple of times a year, preferably a mare but will consider gelding, soft spot for greys :)

I'll look up Jim Derwin voor starters, thanks !

I've been looking at donedeal for months now, very different horses for sale!

We go over a lot and tend to buy off private people - it depends on your budget and what type of horse you want?

I can recommend a couple of good places, and also give you a couple of dealer names to avoid - are you looking for a competition horse or a hunter? How healthy a budget do you have? (pm me if you'd rather!)

Most horses in Ireland are sold through the sales, either Cavan or Goresbridge. Best for young horses, but they do have ridden ones too. Horses in sales have to be entered with vettings, and there is the opportunity to have any purchase re-vetted at the sale. I'd recommend this route and have bought dozens this way over the years, you'd want to be experienced or have good advice 'tho.

Dealers (including the Derwin's) can be the way to go, but they will sell you literally ANYTHING (and not always in a good way....).
