Horselyx in stable?

Chico loves his respiratory mini horselyx so i am considering getting one of the stable holders so he can have a full sized horselyx in his stable.

However.....

Will Chico self regulate himself with it or do some horses just go at it until it is gone?
 
I have stopped using them when I groom as Bree gets through them is quickly and they are very sweet. I have one of those hanging holders that swivels but sadly the YO says I can't hang it in her stable as "everyone would want to". :mad:

Big fuzzy just keeps on till the huge tub is empty - smashing the tub up as she goes to get those last lickings out.
1 big 5kg tub will last max 48 hours tho the best record was overnight last winter as I had forgotten that I'd left one in her stable (new & with lid still on - I dumped it on passing the box when raining) - she'd scoffed the lot & trashed the tub between 5.30pm & 6.30am :eek: ....and eaten her hay all up too :D

I only get 1 or 2 a year now & they are popped into the stable for up to 10 mins max twice a week in the winter only!
Actually, thinking about it - I havent brought one since I lost Little Fuzzy (RIP) in early March.

Bug Fuzzy has never heard of self regulating when it comes to anything that can be shoved down her throat :o she even happily slurps on wormer syringes :D

I hope yours is better behaved about these & has better table manners :)

ah I thought that might be the case. I will stick to putting his mini lyx in a bucket and letting him have it for 5-10 minutes each day.

he has had likits in his stables, i have one of the holders but he isnt too fussed with likits sadly.

Now if they made a horselyx that fit on a likit holder we'd be their first customer!!
 
My cob had one which he loved so had to be strictly regulated!!

He also liked sharing it and somehow managed to get sticky brown stuff everywhere (stable door, rugs, me, daughter etc) and he managed to turn himself from a grey into a skewbald!

My boy doesn't lic at them until they're gone, he bites chunks out of them. The only way to make sure he doesn't is to hold it and take it off him if he goes to bite. When he first figured it out, I didn't realise he was eating it until I heard him crunching and saw brown goo oozing out his mouth (I'd been wondering how he'd managed to have so much of it gone in a short space of time). :rolleyes:

He used to only use it for short periods, but I think it was a case of him getting fed up, rather than having enough...
 
If you buy the proper stable holder for the horslyx it comes with a double bar that goes across the top which stops them biting the lick and stops them getting it out of the holder so I find that as long as you put the bar on they do last a while. Mine can get through the 25kg field lick in a day (between 4 horses) as they can bite it and they also smash it so I won't use those anymore but the 5kg stable licks in the holder last between a week (for the greediest horse) and three weeks each.
 
I'm really surprised by these replies. I've had three horses in total and all of them have self-regulated and licked rather than bitten. I use the 5kg one and put it in a skip whilst doing jobs, getting ready to ride, cooling off etc so it doesn't end up being pushed around the place and I never leave it in the stable when I leave. Although they all ended up with sticky muzzles afterwards, Ive found it disappears naturally over the course of a few days (but I'm not averse to a scruffy horse!) :p
 
Are the ones who eat them like sweeties on adlib hay as well?

We have similar for sheep/cattle and tend to find they go through them too fast only if lacking in forage.

Incidentally anyone tried the cattle/sheep crystalyx for their horse. They are cheaper I think and you get a respiratory one for calves.

Once I bought a couple of extra high energy ones for the sheep while I was buying horse stuff and the guy in Carrs (who own Caltech who make them) kind of let it slip they are practically the same thing...:D
 
I won't use them as it would seem pointless me feeding a low sugar/starch feed than added a big lump off sugar for them to eat. The mint one smells lovely
 
Mine scoffed one, now self regulates. he has his in his stable all the time (only in at night) just in a hanging bucket and it lasts 4-8 weeks! He seems to go through phases with it.
I think it has helped with suspected ulcers as (I imagine) in the early hours when he has run out of something to eat he licks his lick.

Have another one who demolished a large Horselyx in a matter of hours! In about 10hrs it was totally gone and Roman had a sticky brown nose for days!
 
I won one of these once and it lasted months and months with several horses! None of the beggars would eat it, gave it away in the end :D
 
Yeah another one here who cant leave them alone with it! They have too much molasses in them - so those who have a sweet tooth cant help themselves!

Got him a Gain block instead with lots of seaweed & copper & trace minerals in it & he self regulates with that one :)
 
I bought a field one for my tbs stable and he has it for several months ans still 1/3 left. Mine self regulates. He can go weeks without having any. Then when the grazing gets poorer or he feels he is obviously lacking in something he has some. I think as he knows it's always there he doesn't feel the need to gorge
 
If planning on using a sheep lick they arent the same at all, check the ingredients carefully for example a sheep lick will not contain any copper as they cannot have it

You may get away with using a sheep lick for horses but never put a horse lick within range of sheep
