Call me stupid but when reading the schedules for shows, it says horse 4 years old and over... Is that 4 years on there exact birthday OR from 1st January?

So if my pony is 4 on 9th may 2015, when can i start doing ridden showing with him?

Neither, only TBs have their 'official' birthday on 1st January, other horses & ponies are judged to be born on 1st May, so any time after 1.5.15 you will be able to start ridden showing, if the pony is ready. What breed is he?
 
In most show rules its 1st Jan and ditto for the rider if childs classes

Take a look at a few of your local ones if you arent sure
