Horses and Accidents

My mum had a accident a few years back. She had stopped at traffic lights on her horse who was standing calmly and still and a car just drove straight into the back of Dukes legs. He was knocked to the floor but was able to stand and walked home. Physically he recovered after months but he was never the same in traffic. He was fine in the yard with cars driving around him etc and we tried everything but one day he bolted on the road after a car come up from behind and nearly ran into a woman walking on the pavement (17.1hh ID so a big horse) and we decided to have him put down as he was just getting dangerous and wouldn't of been happy standing in a field. But every case if different, depend on the accident etc

i bought a horse 2 years ago and i quickly discovered that he was a nightmare to hack out. After my riding instructor did some digging we found out that that my horse had been hacking out when the other horse he was out with got spooked by a skidding car and ended up in the ditch.

I am positive it had effected my horse, as he was dangerous on the road. turned out he hadn't been on the roads since .

I wouldn't buy a horse knowing it had been involved in an incident on the road.

My mare was clipped by a car 18 months ago and she is ok now - it took 8 months of walking her out in hand for her to be safe for riding on teh roads tho.

I would say definately depends on the horse. Mine was out on a road when she got spooked through a cattle grid. Mentally she's as sound as a pound even walking past the cattle grid) and in a month or so she will be physically as well. However, my vet has said there are many other horses who would just not mentally have coped - so guess it really all depends.

Oddly enough my mare was hit at 35 mph by an ignorant tw*t in october. She is now 95% physically fit - but have now realised that she is not traffic proof anymore - she is on livery at the moment - so in horsey rehab - but not really getting it back together in the head - so she may be a field ornament before too long......

My dad had a pony when he was younger who had been in a trailor accident, they didnt know this at the time. One day his brother was riding and there was a horse box parked with its ramp down that he wouldnt go near as he was afraid they were trying to load him. His brother dismounted and tryed to lead him by, and got a nasty bite in the stomach! OPther than that fine
