well more my horses and dog :o

i purchased a 2 year old (some will know after a preious post) i was told she was okay with dogs and this was good because my dog chip comes poo picking with me

but i have found that she isnt fine with them.. she isnt scared but chip just wonders around my wheelbarrow and ignores the horses sniffing around and what not as dogs do but she comes over and tries to bite him and when he runs away from her she chases him and tries to kick him, this ussually results in taz my older horse flying across the field and telling her off as him and chip get on well

chip doesnt bother the horses he isnt interested in what they are doing but she seems to go over in interest and then it turns into her trying to kick him, hes only little (jack russle) and he enjoys going to the yard but i dont want him getting kicked but i also want her to get over her thing with dogs as i dont want to be dealing with it when she is older and say she kicks someone elses dog :(

how do i get her used to him with out putting him in danger... he is good at commands so if i tell him out and stay he will lay out side the fence but it doesnt seem to get her used to it

help please would be much appriciated!

tea and biscuits for all :)

I haven't worked out the answer to this yet.

My filly used to be in a field with a footpath and some bleddy idiot let their dog chase the horses. After a couple of laps of the field she turned around and went for the dog. Now she sees off any dog that enters her field, she is fine when I lead her out and we pass dogwalkers with their dogs on leads.

Everytime the farmer comes to move his sheep (this is two years after being chased) I have to take her out of the field because I really don't want her to hurt the sheepdog and she would if she could.

i think what im more scared of is her kicking a dog (when she is broken) while hacking, and chip ran behind her the otherday while she was grazing and she tried to double barrel him, taz was a pain when he was younger with dogs he used to try and stand on their tails but he has never tried to bite or kick a dog... im lucky in the fact that no other dogs can get on the yard which is why chip comes up as he is terrefied of other dogs after being attacked but now the horse is trying to get him -.- cant win!

She is a baby and is interested in all things - the dog looks like a good thing to bully so she will have a go at him.
If the dog stood up to her and snapped at her nose she would realise that he is not going to take her behaviour and leave him alone.

I have multiple dogs of all shapes and sizes and they all mingle in and out with the horses when they are in the stables or the loose sheds but out in the filed some of the youngsters think it is all on for a good game of chase but will back down when the dogs snap at them.

difficult one and I empathise

I do hope it is as FH says that she is just a baby and trying things out with the new to her dog and that things will settle down.

Some horses just dont like dogs that much. ...... lukily all that one in our herd one do is put here ears back or lift a leg in warning if the gsd is hanging around too close for too long. Ohterwise they all get along famously 4 horses and two dogs.

I had it the other way with the gsd at first when she arrived, being aggressive with the horses.. but that was just nervousness as she was like it in many situations too :( . now she runs to greet them before me when we get back off a hack  :D :D :D

one little thought , could it be your attention she wants..... could you arrange to make a fuss of her / feed her etc right next to him while he lays just the other side of the fence..... make positive associations with his company..... and just for now not have him in "her" territory .... just a thought.

ps I have a Taz too but she is a girl lol

i do, she is fed, rugged, groomed and scratched with him and when im leading her he has to sit on the yard as she tries to kick him while im leading her too. she gets alot of attention when ever she walks over to me then she will start eating then notices the dog and goes after him ears pinned back teeth bared and trying to kick him and hes a bit dim sometimes and doesnt move fast enough and just looks at me like 'help!' :o

i will also say when hes on the other side of the fence she will chase him along the fence line waiting for him to come in, and when he does it ends in her trying to jump on him :/

hhhmmmmm so if she is getting a fuss or i near you she wants him away ;)

does she chase him away if you are not near her ?

yes she does if im at the top of the field and he comes in at the bottom she tries to trample him again, shes not very trusting of other people and wont let them touch her or go near her but with the dog she will chase after him anyway
:(

and she hasnt had another dog but she tried to trample a lamb when we herded them past the field and it went under the fence (i wasnt in the field or near the field)

i kind of have a problem with where they wind each other up ie( they both try to bite each other) but not nasty and when he is out in the field the dog will continually run round him when he is in the field but when she stops then he will go over to her to give a nip (but never does)

thats quite telling ;)

soundds like her confidence needs a lot of working on, not just with you but with other people .... she sounds just like my gsd when she came to me ... if it scares you or you are unsure then get on the "attack" first :(

Maybe once she is more settled and trust improves generally she will be more tolerant of the dog.... for the meantime it sounds sensible to keep them seperate. Its easier to muzzle and leash a gsd than a horse

Some horses simply hate dogs and have great fun chasing them.As long as the dog is fit and healthy they should get out the way.If the dog has limited mobility this may pose a problem for you.No easy solutions i'm afraid.

I havent read all the posts but when my now 4 year old was 2 he was bad with my dogs chasing them etc. even chased a fox once, so i was also worried he would kick dogs when he was older speacially as I hunt. But now hes fine with them if we hack out with dogs he will jump out the way not to kick them so no problem, havent tried him with hounds yet but am now fairly sure he will be ok Im sure its just a baby thing, once you back and work her even if she trys anything you will be in control, hopefully ! in the meantime I would keep your dog safe, thats what I did anyway.

yeah she was owned by gypsies (shes a tb x trotter) so no doubt she would have been trotting at speed down the roads by now if i didnt have her and was taken away from her mum early and god knows what they did to her but she is a bit funny with things scared of her own head collar, rugs, fly mask etc funny beast and she has had to get used to a lot, cows, sheep, motor bikes, tractors, bikes, geese, so she has settled well in that respect but she isnt one to go over to everybody, i spend the most time with her and my friend feeds her in the morning so she doesnt mind us but other people shes not too sure :o
