Some people say you should not have ferrets around horses has anybody else heard that?

I thought they were known to keep rodents away so wouldnt that be a good thing on a yard?

Reason I ask is one wandered up on to our yard and the kids want to keep it (it is tame and well handled) we are going to put some "found adverts up in case it has escaped from somewhere.

Bless the little thing someone has gone home to get a rabbit hutch and run to keep it safe and warm till we find the owner.

Ive had ferrets for years. In fact I used to have one that used to let himself out of his cage to come and see me while I was mucking out! They are fab animals! Ive heard that the smell of a ferret will keep away rats. never had rats so maybe its true!

I take in unwanted and stray ferrets and often have quite a few. Have never had a problem keeping them with the horses or had any adverse affects on either. I am not aware of any serious conditions or illnesses that can pass between the two species.

That said, ferrets are susceptible to human coughs and colds and I am always sure to keep my ferts away from anyone who's poorly.

If your ferret is found to be homeless, I'd be happy to recommend you keep him. I really would not worry

PS: Not sure what you are feeding your little chap, but if you haven't been able to get him proper dried Ferret Food yet, be sure to use a high quality DRIED kitten food instead. Ferrets are obligate carnivores and do not cope well on the cereal contents of many normal dog and cat foods. And don't give bread and milk (although he'll love it), he'll just end up with diarrhoea and a tummy ache. If you've nothing else, give him small peices of raw meat until you can find something permanent to feed him on.
