my 5yr old gelding just doesn't feel quite right at the moment, he's not lame at all, but his canter doesn't feel how it usually does. I wondered whether he was disunited or doing a 4 time canter rather than 3, but my instructor watched him and said he's not. She thought that if she was being really really picky he might look slightly stiff on one of his hindlegs, and he wasn't bringing it under him as much as he usually does, but when we changed the rein it was the other leg he looked stiff on. From his tracks it looked like he was dragging his feet a bit, but its difficult to tell in 9 inch sand (another concern entirely which I'll come on to) and when he's charging round the filed he looks fine. I'm going down the obvious lines and getting his back and saddle checked asap, but what else could it be? Could it be that he's having another growth spurt and feeling a bit funny with that? There are no injuries, swelling or heat anywhere. He had his hind shoes off a few weeks ago and my mum wondered whether it was that? He is a rather lazy boy, but obviously I'd rather rule out anything else first.
My sisters pony has been very lame for months now, and the vet said it was arthritis, although it came on very suddenly in the same leg she hurt in a fall, which to me seems more than coincidence! We've tried everything going and its not getting better.
I'm thinking of getting the vet out again for a second opinion about Maddy's arthritis, and to check Flash over, I need peace of mind
due to both of them being not their usual selves I'm wondering whether the fact our sandschool is so small and deep could be causing problems, its about 7 x 15m and 9 inches deep in places
I think this would put a lot of strain on their legs and backs, but we only rent the yard so it is difficult for us to do anything about it
Does anyone have any other ideas of what else could be the problem and what I can check? I've been told not to worry, but I can't help it, they're my babies! Sorry for the long post, well done if you've got this far!
