so what does everybody think (sensible/vetinary/biological/technical theories aside?!?!?)

I'm pretty convinced mares are in foal for 11 months so that the owner has a whole year to forget what it feels like to become nocturnal :D

any other thoughts???

.... if they were elephants it would be 22months. Who can wait that long for a leggy little thing??
The 11 months doesn't bother me as much as the fact that they nearly always foal at unsociable hours and only after you've lost at least a week's sleep and sanity :p

Well. One of out mares actually foaled on Tuesday at the very sociable hour of 9pm. Great, we thought, 1 -1/2hrs to make sure up, suckling, wee'd and poo'd, bed for 11pm. Ha bloody ha. Foaly legs far too long and un co-ordinated, so ended up stripping mum and bottle feeding every hour until 4.30am, when he finally decided he could work his legs out.

So that you can spend 10 months of your life with it ticking along like normal then 1 month dragging waiting fo d-day and the extra 3 weeks they think is funny to hold on for so that you get no sleep and lose that weight you were trying to shift as you are living on nervous energy

Know that feeling.....have just got in from that now.....thankfully foalie is now up and suckling on on:D

One of mine is a treasure and foals within one day of her due dates. So minimal sleeping on site.

The other one! Well - I swear she keeps her legs crossed for as long as possible. For the last foal I slept in my car at the paddock for three weeks. My car is an elderly Honda City! Foal was named Elusive as I never thought it would arrive. She always goes almost a full year.

I think the foal is exceedingly cute so you immediately forget the sleep deprivation you've been suffering.

Well worth the wait.
