Hi all, we are due to move mid February to a new house with land for the horses but no stabling and I am finding the thought of building a yard both exciting and daunting!

I have previously asked questions about the actual yard build and everyone was very helpful but I now have another question!

My horses are currently in Hertfordshire and the new house is in Essex so I need to move them asap as they will be on full livery back in Herts. Obviously I need to apply for planning etc. which takes time so the yard probably will not be built until the end of Spring/beginning of summer? My problem is, I need to buy stables on skids to temporarily house the horses until the yard is built as my horses are highly strung and will not live out and I do not have enough land to do that anyway. Obviously 2 stables will eat into my budget and I will have no use for them once the yard is built and don't want to be stuck with them taking up space. My question is, can the stables on skids be taken off of the skids and incorporated into the yard built? Has anyone else done this? I don't want to move them to a livery yard nearby until the build is done because it would not be fair to keep moving my elderly horse around, so for me it's just not an option.

I'm just wondering if there is an easy solution that is staring me in the face!

Thanks :-)

Be careful with stables. Mine are on skids but council said we may need planning permission as they not moved every 6 weeks. Council said would be in touch but that was nearly 2 years ago! Also bolt them down. 2 at my yard blew straight over in gusts back in jan 2012. thankfully not mine but i was in one trying to put the pony out!

We did something similar moved here in Oct then applied for planning but you can't build over winter anyway so I kept 3 in a 12 by 24 shelter split into 2 with gates on the front, they rotated who was out over night and the third one tended to spend the night under the awning.

It was a good well built shelter and cost £3500, I did intend to sell it once I'd finished the yard but it's actually quite a useful thing to have (mostly in summer to escape flys apparently!), you can sell them second hand

Ditto what is said above. I have 2 field shelters, 1 12x12 and 1 12x24 which came with doors and metal skids. They are excellent quality and cost £3750 (we put them up ourselves). For the floors we have Terram down, then road planings and rubber mats. The planning officer saw them when she did her site visit and wasn't bothered at all. I think it helped that they are where the stables will go.

When the stables are built they will go into the fields and the rubber matting will go into the new stables, so no money wasted.

The only problem is that, because it's so wet, the area outside is like a bog. That will be concreted when we have planning anyway so it's not a big problem, but the horses don't like it much.

Not sure if it is of any use to you, but when I had my yard built I hired temporary stables (from Tushingham Stables) for the interim time (about 3 months for me) This did cost less than buying a shelter or something else (I had 5 stables). They were 10 by 10, but even my 17.2 managed. Only problem was they flooded, and they took a very long time to come and take them away (such a long time infact that 2 years later I still have 4 stable panels.....!)

The people who did our yard incorporated the mobile field shelter 12x36 on the end of our row of stables, this has been great for storing hay and shavings

Great, thanks everyone for replying, that's really helpful. I am now leaning towards field shelters and then using them as a hay/storage area, it makes sense.

Mamamia I will look into terram and road planings as my plan was to use rubber matter for the flooring and obviously need something for the base.

Mil1212 I like your idea of hiring temporary stables. My boyfriend did suggest this and I started to research it but didn't get as far as quotes, so will google the company you used.

Feeling a lot better now...hopefully I can squeeze a menage into my budget after al! :-)

One other option if you don't want something to keep: buy a second hand shelter and sell later => less of a loss than buying new and selling. ebay and the various free ads websites list them.
