Those of you with horses at home ...

Do you own / rent your property? How did you find it - an equestrian specialist agent or regular estate agent?

I have mine at home, funnily enough a client of my husband was looking at houses, came to see this house, it wasn't what they wanted but thought we would love it, so they passed the details on to us, we wouldn't ever have looked at houses round here so we are eternally grateful to them for that.
We have just secured an additional 9 acres of grazing from the farmer at the back of our property.

I live on the farm my family have farmed for three generations now; a lot of the land was sold but we've still got 13 acres of it, sub-divided up into the big 10-acre field and a smaller 3 acres-and-a-bit field.

We've got a tenant farmer who puts his sheep in the ten acre bit; the other land is let out to DIY liveries as sheep never seem to like it there and always do an escape!

So its lovely being able to keep my boy at home, almost for nothing! Having done the "yard" bit in the past and having to hold my tongue and be polite to the Gestapo YO's of the horse industry, simply because there wasn't anywhere else to keep a horse (I'm talking of when I had my old horse some twenty five years ago!), I hope those experiences will make me a more understanding YO coz I know what its like on the other side of the fence.

There are some lovely properties here in Devon; I saw one advertised in the paper the other day up on Dartmoor - it had direct outriding onto the moor, plus a bit of land about the same amount as us, and looked absolutely gorgeous, but it would be such a hassle to move.

Rented my house for just over a year when I was given a foal. I was able to keep him in the field next to my house until the farmer needed it back for his cattle.
And now my landlord lets me keep my horses on his land next to his house and has just recently allowed me 2 and half acres just at the end of my driveway rent free! He previously had horses so is happy for my lot to be there.
Dont think I could cope with been back on a yard with people turning up at different times and feeding etc. I was lucky Id heard about the house via word of mouth but there is no way id get the land for nothing elsewhere -i must be very good tenant? :D

We were looking for somewhere non-estate with enough driveway for OH to keep his moptley collection of vehicles (since added to!). We are not horsey people I hasten to add, it's our daughter, who arrived later, so we were not looking for acres of land. We were in a mortgage race to buy one property but we dropped out due to the fact our solicitor said it was doubtful that we'd be permitted to keep our vehicles there due to the area it was in and the restrictions on the property. In desperation, as we had nowhere to go - and in the end spent 6 months at parents having sold my house, I asked the estate agents and one sent a property over at 25% over our price and said 'ignore the price, go and see it' So we did, we liked the house and the land was a bonus. The owner was prepared to drop the price, as it's unique to the area the price was only a guide and it'd been on the market for 9 months with no interest.

Happens the property came with 3 acres. Three years later, daughter arrived, and had a fascination for the ponies from the local RS that hack up our lane...... somehow we ended up with two of our own.
