Hi there, I own a heavyweight cob who is 13 this year. For the last 5 month or so I've noticed her back end dropping just for a second or two the she regains it. It happens in the field and I've felt it when riding her too. When i got her as a baby she was very over weight.... Not sure if that is significant!
Anyone got any experience of this happening? I have a feeling it's a hock problem but I'm no expert. Thanks.

Do you mean like a stumble? If so my horse does this, he was diagnosed with djd last summer when i notices he was stumbling alot and struggled walking down hills and become on off lame behind. If your worried i would get the vet out.

No she doesn't stumble. She can just be standing still and her back end will give way...like it drops a couple of inches then recovers again. When I'm on her it's like she's about to spook when they took their bum under. Again she recovers it ok and we just carry on.

Is it both sides or just the one? What you are describing sounds like the locking stifle problems I am having with my share cob. He now also has issues with his sacroiliac area. We don't know what came first but they are certainly linked in his case. When it goes one hip seems to pop slightly and his, usually left side, drops. It happens more often when he's going downhill.

It's not on one side though she literally drops her whole back end about 2 inches the instantly recovers it. I suppose it's like us standing on a plug... You go down but immediately stand up straight again. I'm probably not explaining it that well, sorry!

My horse is cold backed and when I get on I have to stand in the styirrups until he is moving, then he is OK. If I sit straight on him his back end goers. Mine is very weak around his sacro iliac area, does your mare look poor there?

Yep, mine has this too. It feels as if whole back end of horse has disappeared for a second.

But it's never happened at a standstill - only in trot to walk transitions, or when walking downhill.

Mine has this problem and also tight/weak hips, it's worse when he's carrying too much weight so I have started to keep him just a little on the lean side (the thread about over weight horses was interesting as many/most horses nowadays are overweight)
He's also been turned out 24/7 since July and does seem to be getting better.

Mine does if he's standing and shifts his weight but when that happens he will stretch his eg back or outwards to release it. He's quite bad at the moment though and we are back to walking him in hand and trying to keep him off the mud..it's a challenge:o
