Just following on from the previous post, I was saddened but not surprised when speaking to the father of a distant relative about this girl's horse. A couple of years ago, said girl bought a nice little cob from a local riding school. Girl was very novice and cob was quite green (although riding school had done a very good job of breaking it and bringing it on). Cob also has a cracking personality and has been very 'forgiving' with his owner. She paid an awful lot of money for it and while he probably wasn't worth it at the time, with the right work he would definitely be worth it in the future.
Anyway, girl lost interest (as she does with everything else) and the horse has been put on full loan with the most lovely family, after being pretty much neglected for about 6 months.
Her father has now said that the family are in love with the horse and want to buy him. They have actually offered her just under what she paid for him (the horse is not worth it in his current state and will need a lot of work). Father has said that this amount is not enough because 'she paid x for it and then had to buy it a saddle and rugs etc' and also because 'they really want it so they will have to pay for it'.
I was pretty disgusted with this. Why do people just assume that horses are commodities?? This is not the first time I've seen horses priced at over what was paid for them, because the owner 'wants to make my money back' when they've been stupid enough to pay over the odds for the horse in the first place.
Also, her father's attitude that if these people like the horse enough, they will have to pay whatever the owner wants for it is also pretty sickening. Clearly the welfare of the animal and the right home for it don't even come into it. I personally would rather lose money on a horse and know it is going to a 5* home than have an extra £500 in my pocket and be constantly wondering what is happening.
Is it just me, or is this happening more and more these days??
Just very sad, I think
