I have a mare with four white legs, very thin skin and prone to boot rub. I clean her boots religiously but after competing at isleham at the weekend, her right fore blew up like a balloon, turning out to be a skin infection. Shes had antibiotics and the leg has resumed its normal size already, however im trying to avoid this happening again. I was wondering whether people could recommend any brush boots that are less likely to irriatate her legs. Would wraps or bandages be better? also is there really anyway i can stop sand getting inside her boots xc?

Any advice would be great. :) Thanks

What are the boots you use made of? She could be allergic to neoprene. And check the fit- rubbing is caused by movement.

What about tubigrip on under the boot?

If you can bandage properly then that may be better as they would move less than boots, hence less rubbing. or find boots that fit better than the ones you have?

I use tubigrip which you can buy cheaply from ebay. It's great as you get a lot of use out of it. Pull it over the hoof and it should be long enough to cover between fetlock and knee, put boot on and then pull tubigrip back down over the boot and secure with a bit of tape.

It's very thin material so doesn't get heavy when wet and it also stops mud travelling up under the boot. I now use it on all horses before going XC and it works a treat, no more rubs!
