Ok so after last Wednesdays lesson where Pidge peed off with me twice at canter (we are NOT supposed to be cantering yet

) he has excelled himself tonight and done it lots of times

hasn't done it when I've schooled him just when having a lesson. Instructor is very good I have to say. She says he's feeling very good in himself and that his action is much freer than before, but we need to stop this cantering lark. So am going to put the double bridle in tomorrow as have tried his kk bits, pelham with two reins to no avail

How can I tell if his peeing off with me (not nasty) is because he is feeling good (which I think it is) or is it because he is on the forehand and finds it easier to canter than trot?
Also had some doubts tonight as found him so strong in the snaffle, and even thought for a moment that perhaps he is mans horse

I'm nearlly 5'6" and he's 17hh and 575kg. Is he too much for me or am I just having a bad day because of how he has been? Never normally have problems with the brakes even when jumping he is keen but controllable in a snaffle.

You're probably just having a bad day because of how he's been, everyone has a series of days where nothing seems right. I've seen the jumping photos of you and him and you make a great partnership, you will have many many better days to follow

Remember the XC schooling, the SJ and the showing? Was he considered a mans horse then? You and him are perfect for eachother, stick in there hun

Just so embarrased as he was far worse tonight than he was last week and just kept going into canter, but then in the next stride would do a lovely trot

Thanks, I suppose we do make a good partnership and I love him to bits, just can't believe I even thought that he was too much for me but then he was just so strong tonight
crazy.gif

thanks, I know deep down he is for me after all we did Somerford Farm Ride in a snaffle and flash and he was fine
grin.gif
but instructor says he is feeling so much better now that the injection has taken effect on his hock and this is why he is pinging at the moment. Just having a bit of self doubt

I do hope this is just short term, am going to increase his work to 45mins per night as opposed to the 30mins he's been on for the last 12 days. Every time I put my legs on he was off

He does sound like he's feleing a bit fresh bless him!
He doesn't sound like he's too big for you at all, I'm 5'5 1/2" and my two riding hrses are 17hh & 17.1!
tongue.gif

thanks, bless him wasn't quite what I was thinking tonight
shocked.gif
to make matters worse we started off in the market harborough and down one side of the school there were a couple of jumps and every time we went near them he was like "ooh mum jumps come on come on let me go you know you want to Ooh spoilsport mum why have we gone round them

Do you ever have days where you think yours are too much for you?

Yeah and I'm 5'10 and my horse is 16hh! It really depends on the horse - someone I know has a 15.1hh horse and she REALLY shouldn't be doing what she does with him, and on the other hand I've known some very petite individuals who've had an easy time on 16.3hh+.

Don't worry at all, it's just a phase! I don't know you, but I'm sure from the others' responses there have been more than enough good experiences to carry on with him. And horses would be robots if they didn't have mood swings...I should know, I have a mare who thinks most horses/people are there to be glared at irritably. Or to be squealed at. =P

You'll be proud of yourself when you get him through this =)

Yes! Especially at the moment - mine is super full of himself. My instructor got on during saturday's lesson, and after 2 minutes said "I can't ride your horse!!". She can of course, & got him going beautifully in the end, but he is rather full of it ATM! Do you think subconsciously with everything that's happened you are trying to be careful with him, and he is taking advantage?! Just a thought because mine does that!

I am delighted he is feeling well, particularly after you were so down about things such a short while ago!

thanks just need to find a bit that will help me to keep him together when I put my legs on! Am trying the double bridle tonight so will see how he goes in that. Don't think it helps that he had 3 weeks off work, is on a very small part of the field and can't do any canter work (or isn't supposed to anyway

Nat I think you may be right in that I am treating him with kid gloves at the moment as I am so scared of doing something and breaking him
crazy.gif
If he had done this before his hock spavin then when he didn't respond to me asking to him stop I would have nipped it in the bud by being really firm with him and stopping him on the spot (rightly or wrongly) now I am trying to stop him by being nice but its not working. think I may have to get a bit tougher with him.................
I am absolutely delighted he is feeling so well, but on the other hand when he takes charge and I become a passenger

I know walder, it was so tempting to leave him cantering, and then there were jumps up in the outdoor too which looked so nice and tempting.
