My dad used to be a really fab-fearless-nutcase-XC type rider but he's had a few probs over the last few (well about 10) years and his confidence in general has taken a nose dive.
He gave his old horse to me about 10 years ago, then didn't really ride until getting his little TB, Tully, a couple of years ago, he's always adored him but always let me do any competing and jumping. We haven't done anything for a while but dads still really into his hacking/grooming/general lovey doveyness with Tully.
I was really shocked when he said he'd told some one he might be for sale and they were coming to see him!!! He's thinking of moving on from his troubles which I think was the reasoning but he was really upset that someone might actually buy him!
He said that he had been such a special horse to him, helped him through bad times and he thinks he might have done something stupid without him!
Anyway, they came to see him, but unfortunately (or fortunatley!) they didn't want him because he wasn't forward going enough!
So dad (after 2 bottles of wine) decided to book himself a jumping lesson!! He has jumped Tully before but anything more than a couple of logs in the wood hasn't really worked that well before.
He remembered he'd actually booked it, and apparently they both did actually brill!! They had no stops and only 2 down in the whole lesson.
I really haven't heard my sad so happy in years!!!
So now he's planning his new SJ career - 60 yo bloke on a baby ex racer - I really hope things keep going well for them!
Probably a boring story, but I find it quite amazing that a horse can help someone like my dad, who for the first 50 years of his life was a complete hard nut kind of horseman, when the going gets though.
