Had a funny conversation with an old friend who was talking about 2 of her mares eating bananas. Do your horses have them?

Found on web that in other countries they are a staple treat - like apples and carrots in this part of the world. Qte "In India horses are often fed bananas. And my horse dentist told me recently that one of his clients feeds her old horse with very poor teeth several bananas a day, and it helps maintain excellent condition," said Goodwin who lives in the U.K.

Nutritionally, bananas are rich in potassium and high in energy; they also contain high levels of phospholipids that can help line the stomach and protect against gastric ulcers. For these reasons, during the Olympic Games in Sydney, bananas were a favourite treat and diet component for horses from seven countries.

Ive not tried it, my horse is already as much of a monkey as I can handle

one of mine has the odd banana, peeled of course although they will eat the skin(even though I've tried it and it makes my mouth dry)
Also loves pears and plums

My three horses love them, so long as they are not under ripe - all have one after their dinner!

Was told by a vet that they are good for them.

Yes mine loves them..
He gets the skin when I eat a banana and some of the banana if I'm feeling nice. They're really good for hiding tablets in too.

The only thing I was told you have to be a little careful of is if they are not organic, then pesticides may build up in the skin.

When I arrived at my trainers yard for a lesson I saw a girl taking a banana in. She said the banana was for her horse, but he would not eat the skin. The horse next door ONLY liked the skin. I went straight home and tried my horses. My horse thought I was bonkers. My shetland was not sure at first, then decided he liked the banana but not the skin.

I have one who likes Parsnips and one who does not.

Yes my mare adores them she'll go for a banana over an apple or carrot anyday!!! You can buy banana flavour horse treats in our local saddlery too.

One of my mares loves them when they are over ripe and my gelding will only eat them if they are perfect. Can't say i have ever tried them with the skins on.
Anyone know if you can an you feed grapes too? I did do until I read somewhere that you shouldn't feed dogs grapes so decided I best stear clear!

i discovered my horse's love for bananas when my son was sitting in his pushchair eating one... Raff came over and pretended to snuffle his hair, the next thing i knew the banana was gone.

now whenever my son has a banana, he 'saves' half for Raff - because he loves to give him a treat, and bananas are far easier for his little hands to offer (2yr old's hands don't make the best resting place for small sweets as they are too tiny!)

btw, Raff is very gentle with my son, and this is obviously supervised etc...

FB hates banana unpeeled (never tried him with peel). The only time I ever gave him one he spat it out all over my boot! He does like banana chips so OH (who doesn't) picks them out of his muesli for him.

Yes my horse loves them. He also like apricots and pitted dates. Some horses will eat plums (allegedly they are able to detect the stones and spit them out, but I am not too sure about this tbh) some horses like strawberries too.

Yep. they will kill for bananas - green through to black, skin or no skin.

That's V funny! I've got visions of my OH doing the same...lol

Mine would mug his granny for one, and pretty much inhales them. He knows if I have one when I arrive, and turns his neck so his head is almost upside down (like a foal suckling) - his way of begging.

He loves melon as well.

The old girl won't touch bananas but loves pears and blackberries (she can pick them herself, but prefers me to do it!). She won't eat strawberries though.

Her son would eat most (sensible) things that he was offered.
Mints are still the favourite!

I have decided I am far too tired as missed the 's' from the word 'horses'

Amber likes peeled bananas. She once grabbed an unpeeled one from my hand, and the look on her face was priceless. Needless to say I got coated in banana and she would not take anything from my hand for the rest of the day.

Have not tried Binky with them, but seeing as he eats anything I am sure he'll enjoy them.

Mackenzie loves his banana flavour horse treats! I think he'd walk off a cliff edge for them!

But he won't touch a real banana though

Ronnie's exactly the same - loves Banana likits and would trample me to death to get to one. But real bananas? Spat out at great velocity.

Loves pears though. He ate a tomato but wasn't sure about it. Quite likes blackberries but won't pick them (my old mare would pick them at the same time as me when I was out riding). Doesn't like strawberries. Haven't tried plums or cherries (stones removed obviously!).

My Irish Draught adores bananas much preferring them to carrots and apples. I feed them with the skins on. I take her the ones that are over ripe which the family won't eat. She also loves parsnips which I buy in large sacks along with carrots in the winter.
