Anyone taking part in the Horses for Heroes to be held in July 2010 on Ascot race Course? Just interested on your thoughts as they keep changing the price and the money to be rasied...... It did sound fantastic as all the money was going to Help the Heros and as we know this is a great charity....

We are going, mostly to support a friend, whos son was badly injured in Afghanistan, back in the autumn. I haven't looked at the money side personally, as luckily one of my owners is paying for me, but I gather the registration fee has gone up to £170, none of which goes to the charity.
Poor show on Windsor Equestrian if that is correct.

There is another tread on horse and hounds re this ride with many concerned people. i was going to take part but have withdrawn as i am very unhappy with the organisers taking 175 per rider in running costs etc. also it appears poorly organised and as a regular rider in the great park i am very unsure whether they will pull off having such large groups - 150 - horses in each group. apparently they are quoting costs for 10 ambulances/ 10 doctors / 8 paramedics / 10 vets / 8 farriers etc etc - i plan to dontate my refunded reg fee ( if i get it ) to what i believe to be a very worthy charity and then try and find other ways to raise more money for them

I think it is absolutely disgusting that Windsor Equestrian have a) increased the entry fee by 75% and b) really think they can get away with quoting running costs of in excess of £300k!

well i am even more concerned re the integrety of this ride now- have just checked the horses for heroes website and they have now removed the need for all riders to raise a minimum 400 sponsorship - so they get the 175 per rider and then people can raise as 'much as possible ' for the charity. they appear to be employing dr;s vets farriers - paying for on site ambulances etc for a 5 mile walk and trot ride !!!! along with paid marshalls etc etc - i am sure the forces would have provided this for free - really think the organisers are having a laugh - and that we have all got carried away with riding on ascot racecourse and forgotten why we were going to do it

Sadly I have also withdrawn having already raised the necessary full amount for the ride. There were two of us in the same family- £350 is just too huge a portion for 'admin'. We will carry on our own fundraising events with the target of £2010 to go direct to Help the Heroes

I think it is a farce, and I would love for Windsor Equestrian to come on here and give their story as to why the goal posts have moved again and again. I wonder whether the Help For Heroes people are aware of what is going on with this. I personally do not know why they don't shelve it if it is costing so much, and maybe try and get race courses around the country to allow 2010 riders (in total, not each

) a go round - ho hum!

As I said before I just hope this is not a scam. I have organised a number of sponsored rides/endurance rides and know the costings involved. Every penny raised including entry fees has always gone directly to the charity(s) involved. All expenses where paid for by corporate or individual sponsorship of the event. The farriers, vets, stewards and health and safety officers always gave their time free of charge. The venues wheer offered to us on a no fee basis. Normally the only expenses where Ambulance and Paramedics/trophies and rosettes which where paid for out of corporate/individual sponsorship.
