William has been a bit of a pickle the last few days when being schooled, my instructor told me to try a different bit in him so I have he was in a french link and I have now tried a snaffle which he hated so I went back to the french link.

Anyway yesterday I decided to stick my fingers in his mouth to see if he maybe had a bad tooth, I couldn't see anything, but I did notice that he has black gums in places, is this normal, or is it a sign for something?

My friend had a look and siad she thought it was just black pigment.

I am just worried that he maybe in discomfort from something.

Sorry if I sound thick.

if it is black along where the bit sits you could suspect bruising, best thing to do would be to get a vet or qualified dentist to take a look, as they will have the equiptment for a through examination.

I have just rung my vet, he asked me if it was a blue black or just black, I told him it is just very black, he said this would be the pigment of the skin, he said if it was blue black it would be brusing.

He asked if it was dry or scaby which it isn't so he said he didn't think it was anything.

Im still a little worried so will keep an eye on it and see if it changes.

Thanks for your reply

It may be worth getting his teeth checked properly. Problems with the molars can cause a lot of discomfort. Probably sounds daft, but check the saddle as well. What kind of pickle does he get in?

he goes really well until I ask him to go into right canter lead, then he just chucks his head up in the air, and there is nothing I can do about it. He goes really nicely on the left rein in canter but for some reason not on the right. He has started leaning on the bit, he is only in a french link.

I might look at getting his saddle rechecked he has had it about a year now so may need ajusting, thanks for the advise.
