Hell

Thursday night Cairo nearly died - vet was ready to pts but Andy insisted he was given a chance. Found him in the field at 8 pm sweated up, panting, body curved and could only walk taking side steps. He was fine at 5 pm that day. Got battered black and blue trying to get him in - I knew that if I could get him to the indoor school he would lie down for me.

Eventually managed it despite being flipped and trod on and 6' inside the school he laid down so I could cover him with rugs. His heart was at 72 and his temp nearly 105.

Vet said liver failure, stroke or embolism in brain or spine and that he was in terrible pain and that together with his bad leg and eyesight to let him go. Again we refused pts so she gave him a large painkiller. 20 mins later he was up and walking straight and proved it was not neurogical. He was then injected with pen & strap and we stayed with him until Saturday night.

By Friday morning, though sleeping lots and tucked up he was much better, temp was 101 and heart 42. Andy has injected him daily since with pen & strap and now he looks lilke normal, in fact by Saturday evening he was back out in the field. His bloods show everything pointing to a huge infection. Vet is back Monday to take more blood and it looks more like infection than failure.

Going to rename him Felix - this horse has 9 lives and I am so glad we refused pts.

Sunday - took Chancer to a show while people kept an eye on the old boy. We did our second attempt at ridden showing. He won the novice class and I was so happy that I withdrew from the coloureds as I did want the feeling of being first to end. We did the championship for experience and to my amazement he was pulled in reserve champion.

He went foot perfect despite howling winds and driving rain - cantered round like a pro, he is still green but we are getting there.

I have to confess having a quick blub - can't believe the ball of fluff I brought home October 2005 did as well as he did - have never been placed in a championship before. I love my little boy.

good grief those symptoms would have been enough to convince me to PTS

how did you know he would come through it? has he had something similar happen before?

well done!

Hope Cairo is feeling better now (Christ knows what I would have done in your position) and well done on the win!!!

<<<<<<<<<<VIBES>>>>>>>>>> for Cairo
((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))) for Chancer

Let just say when I called the vet, I asked them to make sure they had enough drugs to pts a very big horse - he was that bad. It took me 5 mins before I could speak enough to give details I was sobbing so hard.

I have never seen a horse's body curl and not be able to walk straight rather than sideways before and it was only because he is such a good horse that I got him in from the field. Little side steps and circles was how I had to do it - his gamey leg didn't help matters.

When given the options, we insisted on trying to save him first - he has fought off cancer for so many years, we knew he can pull through if possible - he is an old fighter. We checked him every other hour Thursday night and had he started to curl up and crab, then yes, we would have put had vet back to pts but the pain killer so improved him that there was no way we could have given up then with him standing up and rubbing his head on us.

Now needing to see what the blood tests next week show and am praying that his bloods are going back to normal. He certainly is perky enough again. He is 23 this year, but apart from the leg and eyesight, very healthy and still happy to mooch about.

We wonder if Chancer who had been away for three weeks training bought back a virus when he returned last Saturday. He has had no signs of anything wrong but he could be a pestilient pikey pony as Andy has now called him. Vet said not worth taking bloods from him to see if he does have anything.

Am keeping him well away from horses at shows now.

Theresa what an awful thing to happen to you and your big man

Theresa - Im so sorry to read this about Cairo, but glad he pulled through for you!

As for Chancer, I had to double take and check it was him!! he's looking FABULOUS!! Well done for winning your class and getting reserve, he clearly deserves it!

Goodness me what a rollercoaster ride you've had, I really hope that Cairo is ok and on the mend, what a fighter.

Well done to you and Chancer that's fantastic!

I am moved by your account of Chancer's crisis and how you dealt with it. It's an example to us all of how much someone can love and care for a horse.

And well done, your little one, on behaving and showing himself off so well despite the atrocious weather. Brilliant result!
