Thursday night Cairo nearly died - vet was ready to pts but Andy insisted he was given a chance. Found him in the field at 8 pm sweated up, panting, body curved and could only walk taking side steps. He was fine at 5 pm that day. Got battered black and blue trying to get him in - I knew that if I could get him to the indoor school he would lie down for me.
Eventually managed it despite being flipped and trod on and 6' inside the school he laid down so I could cover him with rugs. His heart was at 72 and his temp nearly 105.
Vet said liver failure, stroke or embolism in brain or spine and that he was in terrible pain and that together with his bad leg and eyesight to let him go. Again we refused pts so she gave him a large painkiller. 20 mins later he was up and walking straight and proved it was not neurogical. He was then injected with pen & strap and we stayed with him until Saturday night.
By Friday morning, though sleeping lots and tucked up he was much better, temp was 101 and heart 42. Andy has injected him daily since with pen & strap and now he looks lilke normal, in fact by Saturday evening he was back out in the field. His bloods show everything pointing to a huge infection. Vet is back Monday to take more blood and it looks more like infection than failure.
Going to rename him Felix - this horse has 9 lives and I am so glad we refused pts.
Heaven
Sunday - took Chancer to a show while people kept an eye on the old boy. We did our second attempt at ridden showing. He won the novice class and I was so happy that I withdrew from the coloureds as I did want the feeling of being first to end. We did the championship for experience and to my amazement he was pulled in reserve champion.
He went foot perfect despite howling winds and driving rain - cantered round like a pro, he is still green but we are getting there.
I have to confess having a quick blub - can't believe the ball of fluff I brought home October 2005 did as well as he did - have never been placed in a championship before. I love my little boy.
