My pony has always had a small hernia that the vet told me not to worry about - if it was going to be a problem it would have been already sort of thing.
It was about the size of a 50p piece and hung down less than a cm I would say.
It has grown to probably 3 or 4 times the size of that overnight. He got out onto a huge field of lush thick grass having been on next to nothing and bad quality grazing previously.
I rang the vet who didn't seem overly concerned and said the weight of all that he has eaten has probably pushed a fatty deposit down and it may massage back up (which it didn't), but not to panic and if I'm still concerned after 24 hours they can come out and have a look.
He has show no colicy signs, nothing is different to usual, he is still managing to act hungry despite the night on the grass. I have given him 2 small haynets through they day, he has pooed his normal amounts (although they are runnier and greener than usual). He is his usual perky self.
The vet said if it was gut that had dropped through he would be colicing by now (came in at 8.30 this morning). He is in for the night with another small haynet now.
Has anyone else had any experience of this and think it is normal and nothing to worry about? I just panic and never seem to be able to make myself trust vets without getting other opinions!
He was touchy around it, when he normally isn't. He is however a very touchy/aware sort of pony so its not hugely abnormal behaviour for him to be a bit silly about things.
