Just returned from there. The horses I saw were pulling the caleches for the tourists. While things are not perfect, and indeed they are not for the Egyptian people either, things are not too bad.For sure they work very hard but most look ed in a reasonable condition, there tack was shabby and makeshift often but I didn't see any sores or rubbing. There was a rest station of sorts and it seemed to be used.Saw one man carrying a bucket of water to his horse.Hoof trimming/shoeing not up to British standards, but adequate I would say. Most o f this will be down to the work of the Brooke Foundation. It does seem to be working.

I've been there and like you said it's not up to Brit standards but it's not by any means bad.
Need to look past the pampered pets we have and look at the working animal.
Like you said i saw them in good condition and owners seem to understand if you look after your animals they are able to work for you better.

We were there this time last year and I was also pleasantly suprised. We saw one or two that were in a bad way but generally they seemed in good condition and reasonably well looked after. It is not something you can compare with British standards as they are working animals and - as you say - conditions for many of the people are not up to scratch either. :(

We were there a few years ago & I found it depended where you were. Things were much better for the horses in Luxor (where Brooke had a lovely shelter & watering station) but some of the horses we saw in Cairo made me cry - as we drove away from the pyramids I was leaning out of the tour minibus yelling at some tourists who were about to get in a calesh pulled by a horse that was literally skin & bone with sores, god knows how it had the strength to stand let alone pull.
