How cute was Bill the Pony? I think he was my favourite of all the horses/ponies in the film.

When I was in NZ, I rode one of the horses from the battle scene in the 3rd film where they ride to Gondor, although he was just an "extra" and not one of the main ones.

SO very jealous!!! I always dreamt of doing that :D Lucky you!!

I always loved Snowmane, the Kings horse :D

ETA: Also love the Nazgul horses! Shame one of them died :( (Though, didn't one of the Shadowfax horses die recently too? Domero?)

My husband decided I ought to buy my current horse because he thought he looked like Shadowfax!!! When we went to try him in his stable the sunlight was streaming in and it was dusty and looked very atmospheric. His owners had washed him til he gleamed too.

I didn't even want a grey. He doesn't look like Shadowfax any more, he is too mucky these days!

Isn't it amazing that many horses in film are gorgeous trainable ponies, andalusians and friesians?

I was actually watching the special edition feature for the horses on youtube the other day! It's called The war of horses or something and I really reccomend it! It's lovely to see how all the main actors ended up buying their horse after the movies were filmed because they got so attached to them! viggo mortensen even ended up buying Shadowfax (the big white stallion) for the trainer/stunt rider, she couldn't afford him and he was on sale for a large sum and Viggo went out bought him and rang the stunt rider saying she can collect him whenever :)

Don't fret as in the book Bill is alive and well, and pleased to be reunited with Sam.My old Border Collie was called Frodo, and my Red/White one i have now is "Sam".I always loved the books, and the film was smashing. The horses in it were wonderful.I understand that Vigo Mortenson who played Aragorn bought the horse that Arwen rode in the film for the female trainer and Arwen double in the film.

That was Florian, who was Arwen's horse. He belongs to my vet's wife, the stunt rider for Arwen :D He is GORGEOUS! I met him once when I was on work experience with my vet (who was the vet on set for LOTR as well, it was how they met!)

? Is it? I'd rather train a pony or a Spanish horse than a TB or WB any day :D

Very true JFTD so I guess it isn't amazing at all... pretty boring then really isn't it?

I mean, considering this fact, it's more of a wonder why there aren't more 'trainable' breeds being used as riding horses. Yet, England brims full of these "thick" tb's and wb's... the mind doth boggle............

Viggo Mortensen did buy 'Brego' and take him to the States. He also bought the horse from Hidalgo. I loved the way he got involved with the horses in LOTR.

Ah now that is something I've never understood :D

Though it has a great deal to do with why I don't think I'll ever end up with a boring dumbblood or TB :p

What? The dumbblood & Thickbred - boring??? I don't think so... NL wouldn't be half as interesting without these breeds... :D:D:D

I mean... what would we do without endless discussion on how to fatten up a tb... or what about how to bombproof a spooky dumbblood...

:D

Don't forget the discussions on taming the naughty spanish horses! Mine is certainly full of character and not everyone's cup of tea! I love him dearly, and would love to know how to teach him some 'film' tricks like bowing or laying down... I have taught him to pee in a bucket with no bother!!! Lol!!! Certainly would never swap him for a tb...

Didn't the horse who played Shadowfax pass away recently? There are loads of clips of him on Youtube. I also heard that Viggo guy bought Brego after the film. That's really sweet.
