I've been doing pole work with my mare and the more I do the more excited she gets ;) and she jumps them left.. my stearing goes my control goes etc.

I've just been watching videos of her jumping on youtube before I stopped jumping her and she is going left.. fair enough i've noticed it before but it hasnt crossed my mind tbh.

She's had her back/teeth done, and gets them done regularly. I can't put any other bit in her because she will try and kill me

And the more I jump the worse she gets, even if there are fences in the school that are just piled up in the middle,, i have no control. Over the first fence she's fine, then gets worse in time with the excitement.

Any tips on trying to straighten her up before i start jumping her again.. (imma going to put her on calmer too this year :) )

What bit is she in?
You could put a pole up on the left of the jump to encourgage her to stay straight, maybe keep your whip on the left too, keep the left leg on, and open your right rein to get her more over to the right and therefore straighter.
We've got a pony at our yard who is very forward and loves jumping, she races at the jumps and she is in a gag on the bottom ring. Try circling her very close to the jump and only allow her jump once you feel more in control and when she settles down a bit more. Some flat work before hand to get her listening to you first would also help.
:)

First of all I'll say get a good instructor.

If she's doing it when she gets more excited you may be getting more tense which is effecting her jump. A lot of the time when you get tense it will be worse on one side then the other, therefore if you get tense going over a jump you will lean more one way causing them to drift that way. Try and stay more relaxed when jumping.

As for calming her down, flatwork! You shouldn't jump until you can adjust her stride do a canter-walk and walk-canter transition. Then start schooling around the fences with no intention of jumping them. Do this for a couple of sessions then when she is very relaxed just trotting and cantering around the jumps all of a sudden jump one, then carry on schooling around the jumps.

ETA: Don't do the pole thing without someone experienced on the ground

i would get a good instructor to take a look. a lot of horses will jump to one side- for various reasons- often because the horse is wonky/ the rider is wonky but it can be as subtle as using a girth with elastic on only one side. i tend to jump to the right and having a pole on the landing side helps to keep me straight- however, this can easily frighten a horse- so needs introducing carefully- by an instructor.

ditto what koko says- you need to establish your control on the flat before jumping her...

you need to go back to cross bars (they automatically draw the horse to the centre of the jump, then progress to a straight bar, but put 2 poles on the straight bar - one on the left handside and one on right handside with a small say max 2ft gap between the 2 poles - That will act as a guide to the centre of the pole.
Failing that then keep the staright bar and guidebars in place and put about 4 trotting poles in front of the jump to slow her, keep her thinking and gain focus. There is no need to do this a pussiance height, a simple 2ft 3 will be sufficient (unless she is like mine and hates small fences!)
good luck xxx

p.s check your stirrups are the right length and make sure you yourself dont tense up and lean to one side as this will transfer to your mare xx

Thanks guys, i do more flatwork than anything with her and always have someone on the ground when i jump/do poles. I love her ''phsycotic'' ways when jumping it makes me laugh and i get adrenaline. I've had an instructor who i did flat work with, She does amazing flatwork when she's softened through her back (when she first comes out she's stiff etc)

The girth thing, i have the proffessional choice girth with elastic on both sides, i havent jumped however since i got a new saddle. Just wan't to straighten her up on the poles before i go to fences.

She's a very edgy mare, and probably the hardest horse i've ever ridden, even harder than the youngsters I ride and school.

Thanks for all your advice! It's much appreciated and i'm willing to try.

It never reallly bothered me much before now, it was all a bit of fun, do the odd fence here and there because if i jump regularly she becomes dangerous in the way of no control. But this year I want to get her to the best of ability because she flies over 1m10 likes its nothing (when she isnt being a sketchy mare that is) and try to get her to some clear rounds, ive been mainly focusing on flat work since i've got her and rebroken her.

xx

if you have a problem with jumping then 99% of the time its a flatwork issue i'm afraid... so flatwork and more flatwork! you need to be able to school her round poles on the floor without her getting silly before thinking about going over them... then once she'll go over them quietly then introduce jumps...if you are talking poles on the floor then tramlines can help a lot.
