Any suggestions as to what to do in this situation? My energiser is on during the day, but one of the horses has learnt to bolt through the fencing! Every evening I turn up after work they are out. Yard manager is not impressed. I think this doesn't help as they are in thick neck rugs. Not sure what I can do?

I know how you feel, I was at the yard this evening and the horses were fine, went to get them in 30 mins later and they had run through the electric fence, pulled it down, snapped some of the posts & dragged the tape across the field.

haven't tried it but i've heard some people who leave their rugs off for a bit & let them get zapped so they feel it & hope they don't do it again!

Check how much power is actually going through. If he keeps going through and you're tying it will be much weaker.

I put a metal stake as the corner post and did three strips to stop pain of a pony going through.

Tie about a foot of fencing wire to the front buckle of the rug, some on the out side of the rug and some on the inside so it can touch their chest. Has been known to work, horses are very cleaver, they know when they have rugs on the zap can't get them, my mare knows as soon as the fence is of,f she grabs it with her teeth and runs off with it!

When the weather is this wet it takes the power out a bit - things like the insulators will be wet and conducting more. Not sure how much snow you've got if any, but if you have then snow on the fencing will also make it weaker. Test it to see how much is going through.

If its just simply that hes learnt to get through it quickly there are a few (may sounds harsh!) ways to prevent him. Along with to the rug idea - keep a headcollar on and tie some electric fencing around it so when he goes though it zaps his head as well! Maybe walk him over to the fencing and zap him on the nose yourself just to remind him. Or alternatively you can wire it up to the mains and fry him a bit...!!

My friend is a rug repairer and we have designed a retro fit modification for horses prone to barging through electric fences in thick rugs - it's safe removable for washing etc and shielded so it doesn't rub the horse.
