Would like to hear from people who have used GG , how long was it before you saw results especially weight gain and less stressy behaviour ?

My mare was on gastroguard August this year- for 4 weeks. She didnt show any of the typical stressy & weight loss behaviours, we only really found the ulcers by chance. She was sent to Three Counties with a back problem and refusal to have anything on her back. She was scoped on the chance it may be ulcer related and she was found to have grade 2 ulcers- not horrendous, but vet felt a course of GG would be worth trying. She was re-scoped 4 weeks later and the ulcers had completely gone, so it really did the trick. Sadly the ulcers turned out to be nothing to do with the other behaviours but thats a whole other story! In my experience GG is definitley worth it. Hope that helps slightly :)

He started to look and eat better in about a week. Although I never had him scoped I am sure he had ulcers. His attitude has turned around since being on GG. I ran out a few weeks back and within a few days he was being nappy before he was going onto the gallop. Back on the GG now and he is a pleasure. I highly reccommend it. I use the powder and not the granuales though.

My horse had a 4 week course of GG last summer. He showed very stressy behaviour. It transpired that his ulcers (low grade but 1 in pyloric region) were symptomatic of sacroilliac pain. His stressy behaviour has almost gone (he is never going to be REALLY quiet, but that's his breeding) since he has been treated for his SI dysfunction.

I must add that my horse went away to a holistic vet for 2 weeks and she immediately started him on a herbal 'gut treatment'. She could tell from his stressy behaviour that he had hind gut discomfort and what she said was that GG soon kills off the hindgut fauna/bacteria, because by it's nature GG inhibits the stomach acid and allows undigested food to pass through the hindgut. This soon kills off the good bacteria, so in order to restore his gut health I had to give him a course of 20ml of green clay for 2 weeks then a 2 week break *very important) then for 2 weeks again, whilst all the while giving him 10ml of chlorella a day. This restores the hindgut health. I have used this management twice, because he showed symptoms again after eating a lot of acorns and it works. The green clay and chlorella are inexpensive and available online.
I now feed him magnesium oxide daily as I do all my horses as a precautionary supplement for an inbalance.

I may be wrong, but I think you are referring to an ulcer supplement not GastroGard. GG is £30 a tube and comes in paste form. The 4 week treatment costs around £800.
Other manufacturers make ulcer calmers but they do not cure ulcers. The active ingredient (only available via a vet) in GastroGard shuts down the acid pumps in the horses stomach to allow the ulcers a chance to heal, hence the usual 4 week treatment.

Yes you are right. It was early and my mind wasn't thinking straight! I use the supplement ulcer gard which is made by Equine America. Which I agree is a calmer and not a cure. I have seen a vast difference in my horse though since being on it.

It actually took longer than usual with the mare at my yard. She was on it for a full 3 months before she was back to normal, but this is unusual and people usually see results much quicker, within 3 weeks or so. This mare's ulcers were in the glandular part of the stomach though, not the upper part which is more common.

That's good. That one contains mallow which is good with ulcers :)
