Just heard that 2 or 4 horses (depending on reports) have been loose on M25 in Herts this morning causing havoc. They have now been corralled onto the slip road so main carriageway is reopened.

Hope they're ok and owners are tracked down.

hopefully it's all fine now :)

They were from my yard - all are safe and are coming home tomorrow (they managed to get quite far up the M25!). Owners have been very worried about them - luckily my youngster who was in their field chose not to follow them (and they truly were on a mission to break out as they got past multiple fences!)

I wonder if the oweners will be liable for the clean up op? It must have cost thousands.

I'm sure you can get a wheelbarrow and a shovel from B&Q cheap enough. You can sell the valuable manure on ebay. That should recoup costs. Should've charged the rubberneckers a show fee too :D

oh was around that way today didnt see them! Thankfully! No excuse but the field was there before the dreaded M25 car park.

Just glad to hear they are all ok after their escapade.

Judging from the new of drivers receiving invoices for the carriageway being closed after incidents, this does seem possible

I saw this on the news, a company trying to charge a driver who spun off £3000 for closing the lane: sorry, what do Highways actually do?!

Hope the horses are Ok.

That's positive news! Wonder what caused them to go walkabout?

Yes - have also seen people being charged for damage; but seems if you contest it they back down.

There wasn't any damage today apart from stress damage to frustrated commuters - good excuse for being late for work though!

I drove by there on Sunday and Monday and further round near to the M1/M25 junction I thought there was one chestnut who looked as though he/she could quite easily pop the fence on to the hard shoulder, should they be inclined!

I really think that several layers of fencing, plus high fences (6ft+) should be around any livestock in the proximity of motorways. Seems like these were very determined to get out...

Agreed. I'd never have a horse near a motorway without at least double fencing and at height.

Even if a horse is very determined it seems odd to break fences down and go through hedges to launch out on a road? I've never a horse break a second (unless directly after the first). Jump? Yes. Duck? Yes. Break? Never more than one. I'd want to know if something was chasing them or other circumstances.

You say no damage but it costs businesses thousands of pounds when they is a massive hold up like that. All because someone didn't fence their field properly.

Was a tongue in cheek comment ;)

None of us are aware of the fencing around the fields although agree with Jurassic Park type fencing if near a busy road.

I questioned what would caused them to go 'walkabout' and seems others also share that concern. Also strange that only some of the horses got out as if it were a situation where something spooked them, then surely the herd instinct would have kicked in. Are they all youngsters in that field?

Luckily nothing was hurt.

Im always surprised it isnt like railways - ie the authorities do great big solid fences and then if necessary charge the owners of the land, but it would prevent breakouts causing accidents (normally in that area it is traveller fly grazing horses of which there are 00s, this one is unusual not being that).
