This is right by mine- I live 1 mile from this beach. I believe they were two young girls.
It is notorious for muddy sinking sand at Moreton and Meols. I know people who ride at Moreton, but they know exactly which bits to go on. I will ride on Hoylake and West Kirby beaches, but only the parts I know well.
Thank goodness they managed to save that poor pony, it must have been exhausted.

Lots of beaches on estuaries, = mud on beach. Somerset/Burnham on mud/weston are my local areas. It is avoidable but you 1) need to know what to look for as going along it often isn't obvious, just looks like wetter sand, especially if you end up on a sand 'spit' you can be surrounded by mud very quickly. 2) Need to know the areas it tends to collect in.

oh and 3, because they are usually pretty tidal, not plan on going in the sea.
