Do you horses have rituals?

I have one that every time I catch him he has a wee and a big stretch like a dog and one who has to have a drink when leaving or returning to his field and one that licks you all over your front (if you stand still long enough :D) when you've finished working him what do yours do?

Mum's mare whickers everytime you go out of eyeshot and come back, even for a second. It's very very cute! Mind you she does it when she sees any human at all, we'd be stuffed if someone went to knick her, she'd go happy as a lamb :D

Yes I have one who rolls in the same spot every time after work, one who always faffs about for a few mins before being caught.

And I have a few lets say who always have a pee when I go to catch them it is a bit of a standing joke if anyone is having problems getting their horse to pee in public they say ask me.:o

We have one who always walks away from the mounting block twice, horses are full of their own little ways I think it is best just to let them get on with it as long as they are not being nasty.
There is a countless list at ours that includes biting pawing sniffing etc etc noting nasty I think if you let them have a little quirk or their own personality it does no harm and makes them who they are.

he he...Flozza always poohs before going on the box ..usually at the bottom of the ramp. She alway s comes to the top field at dinnertime and rests her bum on the tree trunk and has a sleep. She always comes to the gate when my car comes up the drive and whickers and has a buck the first time you ask for canter in the school:D

haha YES - our daily turn out ritual - Take head collar off, trot to certain spot (well marked), role on one side, get up, role on other side, sudden jump up and gallop whole way across field, head down, eat grass. Exactly the same every day :D

And then we come in - Head collar on, walk half way through another persons field, poo (so mum has to carry the poo picker all the way down again) keep walking,

We've been told off in the past as he's detroyed the grass where he keeps rolling, but its a little hard to get him to stop!

Luna likes to turn right... (like Zoolander!! lol)

When you take her headcollar off in the stable, she always turns right, even if it means she has to do a full circle to reach her haynet!

My old girl was a weird one, very OCD. She peed every time she saw me no matter when I arrived. She always spooked at the same logs on a hack. Before catching her in she would have to pee again no matter how long it took. You couldn't catch her with a head collar but if you walked up and poked her neck, said, 'Got you' she would follow you anywhere.
She had lots of little habits like the order her feet were picked out, honestly she was nuts. She was rescued by WHW as a youngster tho and always had issues, maybe her way of coping with life. Loved her to bits, after fifteen years together I miss her terribly, although I do appreciate having a horse I can just go and catch.

Did I drive her nuts or just enable her OCD?? Guess we'll have to wait and see on that one!

My old Section D had pee spots on each hacking route and after hacking those same routes for 24 years the spots were easy to see !

The good points to rituals are at least if the ritual doesn't happen you know the horse is out of sorts.

My cobblet calls me when he sees me,he walks up to his spot and goes pee.(same place everytime). If I don't go to feed them straight away, cobblet will call me and then the little section A will start too.Theyre very comical.

Mine ALWAYS rolls in the muddiest patch of the field every time he is turned out.

Always pees the first thing he does when he comes into the stable

yes, bring in do a lap of the stable, come to the door for her apple. then when i go and get the brushes she plays her daily game of lock me in the cupboard, open the door, then lock me in again, then open the door, then lock.... you get the idea :p

I thought my horse had some funny ones! His favourite is to make sure he rubs his hocks on the wheelbarrow while I am mucking out, so it has to be positioned so he cant push it over. Tacking up is like this every time - try to put bit in mouth, so head goes up far enough for me not to be able to reach. Hand on nose brings it down, opens mouth and then shakes his head when I try to do up curb chaing. Bridle on, tries to bite me when I put his saddle on, and then when I thread his breastplate through his girth he walks back 2 steps - always 2 steps. When untacking he always puts his head down when I left his bridle over his ears.

He always has to have a pee after work, no matter what. Always pees on a clean bed. If we come to a gate, he tries to open it. Always tries to push open yard gates, even though we need a security code. When he is turned out he has a bite of the same bush as we walk down the lane. Once in the field he goes straight to the trough for a drink - always.

Mine when he doesn't want to work will 'fake wee' just so he can have stop and eat some more grass - he can be a right pita!

ATM his favourite trait is pushing his furry nose through the snow

He was desperate for a roll in the snow this morning before I put him in his restricted pen - but he couldn't find the right spot, I've no doubt he'll try again when I take him out later :)

Yep, two do.
One throws his feed bucket over the door when finished every day
One rolls in the same place every day, and wont let you catch her, but if she knows shes to come in takes herself to the gate and waits for you.
