How sensitive is your horses smell or for those of you with more than one horse, have you ever notice a difference.

Only reason I ask this slightly random question is most horses that I have handled say for example your checking on them in the field or going to catch one of just simply saying hello and giving them a stroke etc in the field etc don't usually pick up on if I have a small apple in the inside pocket of my gillet, with another coat over the top zipped up.

As a rule I don't feed titbits, for obvious reasons but lately I have been buying those small Gold & Delicious Apples in a pack, and if I don't eat it at work, I take it back to the yard with me, not every day, say twice week.

None of the other horses appear to smell it on me, they come up say hello, wonder off and continue to graze but Mackenzie knows instantly once he's come up to me and will hound me (sniffing, following me, neighing under his breath) until I've given him it, then he back off and be his normal self. But on the days I've not got an apple hidden on me, he comes up says hello and just either stands nicely or begins to graze again at the of me.

Obviously mix/pony nuts/mints etc have a stronger smell so most horses would pick up on it through your layers of clothing despite not having the smell on your hands but he seems to have a real strong sense of smell compared to other horses and just wondered if anyone else has come across this?

I know stallions have a better sense of smell but just wondered if it is also varied between others as well.

My horse has a very sensitive nose compared to other horses I know! She can smell something dead a mile off and will refuse to go past it (had to pass a long-dead rabbit this morning which she started spooking at a mile off), same with badgers, cows and other smelly beasties! She will also ALWAYS raid my pockets for treats if I have even one polo, but will generally not bother if I don't - she can obviously smell it on me instantly!
Berlin is far more sensitive with his hearing, some are sensitive about what they can see... makes 'em all different I suppose!
