I will also put this in vets but anyone with experience of this please help.

Vardi got cast at the weekend.

Now his entire off side where he was laying and scrabbling on the ground to get up is covered in scabs and is now cracking and peeling off exposing new pink skin underneath.....he is so so sore.

We are talking huge areas here.....the entire hip and flank, the entire rib cage, the shoulder, side of his head, ear, and top of his neck.

Vet has said let it happen and ensure it is kept clean at all times as the risk of infection on such an area of exposed skin is high. We have to hose him 3 times a day and apply cream or the skin dries out and is so painful for him.....he even finds the water from the hose painful and will let us apply the cream but I can tell it is really hurting him.

Obviously all this new skin is in danger of getting sunburnt as well....cream is really not doing the trick for him and is keeping it too wet we have tonight applied Green Clay with the thought that it will keep it clean and as it dries and comes away will gently bring the shedding skin with it.

My OH saw it tonight and described him looking like a Cow Skin rug you see in IKEA we have huge strips of skin coming away.

Anyone ever had this before? WHat did you do? How was your horse following it? Any thing you used that eased the pain and discomfort?

Sorry I was in no fit state to take pics today....but OH will at the Weekend.....it won't be pretty.

Thanks

Ouch, poor horse. He must be very bruised.

Try to keep the horse in during the day and out at night to avoid the sun.
You could feed marigold, that is a great herb for skin conditions and will help the skin heal. Arnica will help with bruising. Speak to your vet again and get some bute for a few days to help with the discomfort.

Friends horse got badly cast and the same thing happened to his hip..... She used Dermagel and swears that its what stopped the hair growing back white

Not quite the same but Rafi lost his skin a couple of weeks ago through pressure from the saddle. Twice a day I cleaned it with hibiscrub solution on lots of cooton wool, I did circular movements and then dried it and applieda really soft cream , such as sudacrem, then after a few days I used aloe vera. This is the pic of his back

Luckily the hair growing back white is not an issue as he is a Roaned out Appy.......Said today thank god he is not a Fresian or he would have a go faster stripe!

Amazing how you can keep your humour!

Carthorse....yep that is is it but on a larger scale.....the skin is scabby puckering then splits (especially painful on his hip poor love)

Teddy T the vet has perscribed Metacam for another week which seems to be working.

It will be the dead skin sloughing off as the new skin underneath matures, its nothing to worry about, just keep him out of the sun and flies.

Hi Chav horse
I've had this with a mare I had some years ago who couldn't balance herself travelling herringbone. She'd develop huge pressure sores either side of her tail which caused the skin to break up almost immediately into little squares, then flake away.

I too kept it moist with dermisol / dermagel and ended up making a home-made tail guard with a huge foam pad for her to wear 'til we could change our lorry to rear facing.

Hope your boy recovers nice & soon as they do look a bit of a mess but also hope he's not going to make a habit of getting cast - such a worry for you.
Good luck x

Another one for aloe vera. Its great stuff, keeps the skin moisturised and supply, so should help prevent splits and cracks. Once its stopped being so sore you could always use sudocrem, worked wonders after D had stripped his nose sending it manky and scabby after he got bad sunburn. Hope your horsie feels better soon. xx

Would this happen so quickly? He was cast on Sunday morning......Skin under the flaps that are hanging is weepy.

He is out in a paddock which has 90% shade (at last it comes in useful!) and is wearing a bug busta rug and face mask.......too hot to put him inside plus he needs to walk about to keep his leg from stocking up.

As soon as the skin moves away from the body it dies, the weeping is normal cellular fluid leaking because that top layer of skin is missing that normally holds the fluid in the tissues. this is the area that is prone to infection. it should scab over like a graze on a knee does and the affected areas should gradually shrink and reduce in size if it is superficial this should happen quite quickly, the deeper the abrasion the more wound care is needed

Yes Beechwoodbutch thanks that is now clear as a bell.....I am trying very hard not to overreact but I have never seen anything on this scale before.

Anyhow we have now had the bloods back and he is tying up very badly ......I am starting to dread my mobile flashing up the word VET!
