Horses tail being eaten

A horse has been munching on my horses tail. I'm gutted, she had such a nice tail! Any ideas on how I can prevent this, what I could put on it?

Plait it up in the field, either leave it long, knot it or bag it.:)
It won't hurt in the winter anyway and will keep the mud/snow balls out of it too, I always used to plait up in winter.

I don't think that there is one set thing to deter horses from chewing, I've tried practcally everything from No-chew or whatever the cribbing stuff is called, through vinegar or curry powder to wahing up liquid. Nothing has worked for all the culprits! One colt seemed to positively enjoy sucking washing liquid from his Mom's tail - weirdo! You just have to experiment and see what works for you. A friend of mine rubs a bar of Dove soap (has to be Dove apparently) into her horses's tails and swears by it.:D

Good luck.

I use cribox on my cob's tail otherwise sheep (esp. lambs) will eat it down! Also caught them at her mane once when she was having a nap...is nothing sacred?!

I used to put a mustard and curry powder mixed with water in bensons tail when one was cribbing on his tail. Stopped it fairly quickly.

Thanks, I will start with the plaiting and go from there. I'm liking the idea of mustard and curry powder, but as you say its probably trying different things and see what works.
