is mine in the minority? or are there many out there that dont hack alone.

are there any riders who dont hack out alone?

i need to find a buyer who doesnt hack alone, i think i'm asking for the world!!
 
TBH there is always that one in a million chance one'd need someone to call an ambulance & get the horse out of the road, etc, etc so, even if the other person is on foot/bicycle I'd prefer company.
 
My horse didn't hack alone when I got him, but after a year of hard work and perseverence, he will now go anywhere alone. I now prefer to hack alone, mainly because the other people on the yard think that every grass verge is for galloping, and having seen some of the sh*te on the grass verges round us I wouldn't walk on them, let alone gallop!

I am sure you will find a home for your horse - some people don't enjoy hacking at all (not necessarily comp. riders) but just enjoy a bimble around the school, or a ride around the field.
 
I wouldn't ever buy a horse that didn't hack alone, if that answers your question somewhat. Part of the pleasure of riding for me is to be able to go out wandering, just me and my horse, free of meddlesome other people and their inane chatter.

Is there a specific reason the horse won't hack alone? I've found most can eventually be taught to accept it.

it's not a huge ask, not like you're trying to sell a lunatic. Someone might be able to get the horse over it's nappiness (I'm assuming this is why he doesn't hack alone) or they just always like company so wouldn't mind. Girls at our yard never go out alone but that just cos they see hacking as a gossip fest

you don't do it on your own! I generally always hack alone (and miss all the gossip) but that's cos my mare is an utter cow in company

echo blackcob, I need to and like to hack alone. Our first mare took some time but she was young and a little insecure. We have a nice 10min circle route so started doing that after a schooling session and she never looked back. Hacking is now her favourite thing. If she had never got round that she would have been sold as hacking is our main exercise as we have no school, so it depends on the state of the mud in winter!


I have to say though being able to and being nice to hack alone are 2 different things. Out of necessity I would like something able to, for me though I would like something nice to as I'm supposd to enjoy it. Mine is actually better on his own, he walks faster!

Am sure you will find someone though.
 

Hacking issues wouldn't bother someone like me, I live in the manege and really dislike hacking! I'd just get someone else to hack him in company lol
 
I might be a bit put off by a horse that doesnt hack alone - having said that - my pony will not hack alone, a fact i knew when i bought him. I am not really too bothered about it, although once in a while i would like to be able to. BUT when i do get out on my own i am a nervous wreck and dont really enjoy it!

Up until 2 weeks ago I didn't have another horse to ride with, so having a horse that will hack alone was very important when I was buying. Now we have a freshly backed youngster to work on, he went for his first little hack today with Jack as nanny. Next project, roads!

But I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't hack at all or only with others.
 
Hacking Angel alone used to be a BIG no go. she will now quite happily do the routes we know alone lets just say you have to be in the right frame of mind to go exploring!

Mine is a terrible hack - he used to be ok but then we had an incident - to cut a long story short car towing trailer with ladders on pot holey back country road, ladders bounced while driver crawling past, Jack basically sat on top of the car in his panic. Luckily nobody hurt (other than the car!) but now I really can't hack alone for insurance purposes if nothing else and it's not fair on him as he panics with anything bigger than cars now - he's ok with a buddy to babysit him though. Lots of people don't like hacking though as well!
 
What else does the horse do?

If I was buying a hack, I'd expect it to be really well behaved alone and in company. If I was buying a showjumper, I'd consider the fact that it is a good hack in company a bonus and accept not hacking alone.

Don't put it in the advert, stress what the horse IS good at, then when people phone, explain the limitation and leave it up to them if they are still interested. It wouldn't put me off if the horse ticked plenty of other boxes.

I would never buy a horse that can't be hacked on it's own.

For the most it's either because they are nappy, or simply have not had a great education - and so genuinly get worried about it.

What is your horses issue???
 
If I was buying I wouldn't buy a horse that couldn't hack alone, purely because I enjoy hacking alone and getting away from everything after a hard day at work. Even if I do hack in company it often involves a short hack to a friends yard as my yard is pretty much Paddy and another horse so not much hacking buddy choice! I actually would put it in the advert as its quite frustrating when you like the look of a horse only to find out it doesn't go out alone.
 
My OH used to have a horse that didn't hack - well he did, but it wasn't an enjoyable or safe pasttime!

TBH It was a bit of a pain, because it ment he was limited to the school or field. His current horse hacks alone or in company and life is much better for us all.
 
My horse doesn't hack alone, hes had a great education and competed sucessfully BE, BD and BSJA, its probably his only negative but he's excellent in company, alone he naps yes not dramatically just walks backwards, I wouldn't want to have a fight and jepordise his already good behaviour hacking out in company and in traffic. Its is inconvinient at times but in the scheme of things thats nothing for a safe sound horse that does the job you want.
 
My boy didn't hack out when i brought him, he was used for showing and was worked in the school and his parties were his shows and competition outings. I was made to feel a bit of an idiot when i brought him as he was fine for the first month going out on his own and then turned into a monster, if i'm honest he frightened me. Despite being made to feel small by certain people I found a lovely friend who is one in a million and we started hacking together. It was the best thing I could have done. Looking back on it now i should have treated him as a newly backed four year old, but its difficult when he would jump anything I asked and was one in a million in the school.

I hacked him 90% with company for about three months, he wouldn't even walk by the side or infront I then did the odd hack on my own. I now have a horse who will hack on his own and in company and gets very grumpy if he isn't the leader. Very amusing! I would do it all again for the right horse.
