and I mean the ones that really like to play dirty.

For those of you that have been told to get rid, your horse is dangerous , don’t ever ride it out by yourself, why bother with the hassle etc, well they were probably right and obviously have more common sense that you.

But should you share the same stubborn attitude and mentality as your own horse :D (which is probably a good thing at least you’re a good match) then you may one day (out of the 365 days of the year) finally be able hack your horse out without any issues and have a pleasant and most enjoyable ride together.

It might not happen again very soon but if you can succeed once, you can succeed again. :)

I've had a napper - who was what I would class a 'safe' napper.

If I'd had one as you described, it would either have been sold or shot!

Iv just bought a serious napper (i hasten to add.....i didnt know this when i bought him!!! didnt do it on his trial etc)
you may have seen my post back along about it!
He spins....shoots backwards, mini rears, massive bucks, broncing! Didnt help that i hadnt done much riding in the last few years!

However.......after being ridden by my RI and made to walk down the road backwards it thats what it took....and then me doing alot of riding out with others....(he tried it on once out with another) and then mini hacks alone with mum on the bike.....good old mum :-D we are slowly improving.
We have had one hack alone now with none of the above....almost kick along!!! well untill the geese!
But i think he is realising that in this home he doesnt get away with that sort of behaviour and i am not a quitter!!!
I know it will always be there but in 8 weeks we have shown a lot of progress!

Fingers crossed we will get over the worst of it and will be able to ride out alone without too many issues by the end of the summer!

But if someone sees a 14.2 skewbald in the back of a lorry destined for the glue factory.....you know thats not the case ;-)

my horse used to nap when i rode past the arena gate and wouldnt walk into the arena when i was on him but he's fine with that part now ... he still naps when we go on a hack alone and when xc or in a field with another horse though!! but he is getting better :) ... i find hacking him with washing line reins encourages him forwards, as when i have short reins he feels tense and restricted if that makes sense lol

a girl was opening a gate for me a couple of months ago and mi horse started walking backwards, n she was like beat him on! i was like u've clearly not had a napper lol well i just gave him the reins n kicked im on n e went into the arena fine ... I would hate to see what my horse would be like if she owned him!!

Unfortunately for all the nappers that come my way - I am more stubborn then them, and as I'm not as supple as I used to be, I don't fall off - it's to difficult to get back on, you see, therefore the only way to get me off is to go down with me and then the success is not guaranteed...:D

Lol martlin.....lucky for some....i fell of 3 times in about as many mins the first time mine did it...... :-S
now he is not so lucky.....i can just about hang on when he rodeos....i think its why he is giving up....its not so much fun when i am not somersaulting through the air!! :-D

Horrid Herbie is the king of napping.
He will stop dead and if you don't give in and take him home he will Buck, Rear and Leap till he gets his own way or you are on the floor. He does this all the time no matter if he is alone or in company, infront or behind. He has been aloud to get away with it with his last owner . Which is how he ended up with me at the last chance saloon. He is improving as i am more stubborn than he is and i will make him a nice pony. I get off and lead him if he refuses to go so he is made to go forwards. He is slowly lurning it is better to go without me getting off. Infact i hacked him out this afternoon and only had to get off 3 times. A big achievement for us :D:D:D:D

Yup been there, done that (not on a horse i owned) and will never EVER put up with it again as it is the one and only time my confidence has plumitted through the floor when riding to the point i felt sick to have to deal with it on the floor!
This horse would (from any pace, including canter) slam on the brakes, and either not move and wait for you to ask it to go forwards, or auto go into a rear (and it did full, stand on one leg straight up rears) OR, it would run backwards, rear, and run backwards on back legs!! (which is slightly terrifying might i add!!!!)

It was not my horse, and the owner decided (thank god) to send it to a professional trainer (as it is such a fabulous horse, and was so lovely and incredible to ride before this napping idea came into its head) and it spent 1 weeks being a GIT at this yard, and from then onwards it is has just been a dream to the point they put their 13yo groom on it for a ride!!! don't get me wrong it will never be a "novice ride" but it wasnt when I first started riding it, but now it is definetly not nappy, but thats because it is in hard challenging work every day.

But for me I just couldnt risk losing my confidence in riding after 22years of not losing it when horses were naughty or stupid etc but this horse nearly knocked me completely, if it hadnt been for its sister being such a star (and much bigger at 17.2hh as well!) I don't know what i would have done!

Also, if the trainer hadnt been so patient and good with this horse I think it prob would have been pts as it was just becoming unridable/touchable by anyone and everyone!
