Personally I hate seeing horses with flies all round their eyes but try telling that to the horse I share who as soon as you put it on, shakes it straight back off again. I give up!! I'm going with the thought that he knows best and if he wants flies round his eyes then who am I to stop him  to be fair he has got a long forelock to act as a fly swat.

Have you tried putting a field safe head collar over the top of it?

This is what I do with mine and it really helps as I cba to go hiking through a bloody huge field for one tine fly mask :p

We have the same problem with one of ours, we have tried every fly mask there is out there practically and he gets them off, we have found them in the hedge, over the other side of the fence, he's come in with them hanging round his head, I do keep trying but I know I'm fighting a loosing battle!

What make of mask are you using?

I've found the best ones to stay on are the equilibrium. They are nice and stretchy (as well as soft and hard wearing) so you can get them on snug. Well worth the money over the cheap ones that fall apart and don't stay on.

I havnt tried one but I saw one in a catalouge that was a lycra head with mesh over the eyes might be worth a try. If you do try one let me know if it works :)

I've seen people plait the forelock to the mask, which is a failsafe method but I'd be worried about the forelock getting ripped out somehow!

Use one of the old fashioned string ones that you can attach to a field safe headcollar. They are cheap as chips and surprisingly effective

Old Mare won't wear a mesh fly mask. She thinks she's blind and just won't move or eat. I left her 11 hours one day to try and force her and she still hadn't moved so she won. She now wears an old fashioned fly fringe and is happy horsey

Have given up with my lot tried all of them and what they can't roll off or rub off they get one of the others to pull off and trash, Chain harrowed the land the other day and am still picking up little bits of the string ones from years ago, they like to use each others tails.

Mind you I am on top of the South Downs so I don't get a lot of flies and there is usually a breeze to keep them off.

All the horses on my yard wear fly masks... So I got one for NAS, he got rub marks from it... I have two issues with them...
If I wear sunglasses constantly and then take them off my eyes are funny, also how annoying would it be if a fly got trapped underneath one.

I,ve decided this year no fly mask. I just make sure he has plenty of fly spray on.

The other thing I wanted to try was those tags they put in cows ears that are meant to keep the flys away.

Have you seen this Roma Lycra Eye Saver?

Flymask.jpg

"The Roma Lycra full face fly guard is a very lightweight, soft and flexible fly mask for horses and ponies. Ideal for horses that suffer with the flies, or are prone to eye infections. This fly mask leaves the ears free for those horses that dislike their ears covered."

As it's made of lycra, you just have to pull it over their head. Alot more difficult to pull off!

Worth a try??

i cover my horses eyes with my hand and then spray my tropical fly spray over her face and then cover her nose and do that. i was worried i might get something in her eyes or u her nose so i tried it on me and it was fine. its so strong she doesnt even get blue bottles on her and she doesnt mind me doing it at all. just a segestion
