Horses TO 24/7 with rugs on?

I dont tend to,, Beau is out in a 200g, Lance is naked, if its a warm day I will try to nip up and take his rug off, but at this time of year he hasnt overheated at all in his 200g!

Depends. Come the proper winter I won't, unless we go sub zero, then they will have an extra liner under their heavyweights. At the moment I am if the weather man says we are going to go much above about 12 degrees, then my clipped one has his LW instead of MW and the unclipped ones go naked instead of LWs.

I do at the moment- currently 40g during day and 80g at night, although I think im going to start putting on the 200g at night as it was super cold last night.

I have mare and foalie turned out 24/7 - take rugs off am but back on at night as there has been a frost most nights this week.

Wouldn't leave them on all day though.

I do. There's too much of a change in the temperature between day and night just now to leave the one rug one IMO. Once it gets colder during the day (or milder at night!) he'll have the same rug on day and night probably.

i am just now as it is sooo cold at night but quite mild when the sun is out during the day. take his rug off in the morning and put it back on again at tea time.

in the realy cold winter tho dont tend to most days, unless there is a realy big drop/rise in temp then i wil change rug accordingly. sometimes just take off a neck rug if needed

Nope!
Mine have their Orican 350g rugs on atm! all 3 are fine.
They will be coming in next week (mainly due to the fireworks). But they seem to be thriving in this weather.

Nope, can't see the point in taking a nice warm rug off, to put a cold one on, have three out hunter clipped and they are in m/w two with necks and one high neck, all fine and happy.......

At the moment with the huge difference in temps day & night my boy is in a LW or 100g during the day & his 220g MW at night. Over the weekend he was naked for a few hours in the day as it was so nice.

When it gets proper cold I will play it by ear. This is my first winter having a go at 24/7 turnout (but I can stable if I wish) whether I will go all soft & put him in at nights (with his PJ's on!) I don't know.

Thankfully I am sharing horse duties with a friend so we help each other out, meaning I do not have to go down everytime I want to change / take off his rugs!

So my 3, out 24/7, unclipped (but in B's case not at all hairy), fat and wearing their LW's all the time (obviously I check for rubs and groom them occasionally

) is not a problem.

It's daft really, as I know they are warm enough at night, and I know that they are not too hot in the day - never hot when I arrive in the evenings and certianly no signs of sweating in the sunshine of the day. However, all these posts about rugging have made me think....... I mean, if I could get there in the am, I might do things differently - YO checks on them and throws them hay for me!

ETS: Will prob get a slating for not doing them myself 2x a day now!

Yes, as he is in at night. Has two on at night 4oz and a 6oz with a neck. Fully clipped and feels the cold. Turn out is a 10oz one with neck.
Pony is naked during the day and light quilt on at night.

When mine are out 24 x 7 I will either remove rugs or put on lighter ones - however they are only out 24 x 7 May to October so the temperatures can really vary.

If they are in summer t/o and the day is set to stay wet and windy, then I do leave the same rug on as it more for protection from elements - our field has none than keeping them warm.

Nope. My high chaser clipped TB is in a Mark Todd l/w at the mo - no filling at all. She overheats so easily, most days last week she came in wet under her rug (she dries quickly tho as it's on her clipped shoulders) and probably would have been ok naked out. Plus her stable is 3 in in a barn so not near any draughts. It can be a nightmare having a hot horse though!

Mine is fully clipped. He's out in a 250g during the day and in at night in a 400g stable rug. Its been hovering around 2 degrees at night for the past few days but quite warm during the daytime.

When it gets colder during the day he'll wear his heavyweight Bucas turnout rug day and night.

Our 4 are all chaser clipped, living out and during the day the 3 1/2 year old has 200g normal rug, the others have fullnecks and at night they all have 350g fullnecks. I check the metoffice website every morning and rug according to the weather in our nearest town.

My horse is fully clipped except for his legs and face. He has a mediumweight NZ on during the day (with hood). At night I use a thin fleece with a heavyweight stable rug to keep him snug.

No.
MW turnouts all the time, but then we don't get anything like the rainfall the UK does so rugs don't get wet and clammy. If it does rain then the rugs freeze solid, I go around cracking the ice off them!

Yes I remove my gelding's turnout during the day and my mare who is on box rest has her stable rug off during the day too. However I'm going to clip soon so then I won't, unless it's particularly mild.

No. Ours are wearing their natural rugs and they cope perfectly well with the temperature changes.
When the finally get rugs put on, they will wear the same day and night as they still have the same temperature coping strategy.
