As title really...

Has anyone still had their horse & managed to go travelling?

Me nd my friend really want too. Im 20 so think.i should do it know whildt iv got chance..
But!
I have my pony...
Theres no way id sell him as,
A) i got him v v cheap as owner thinks he'll have a home for life (he will)
B)i wouldnt sell him
c) i wouldnt be able to sell him if i wanted as v difficult & prone to bolting

couldnt/wouldnt loan.him for trason c & i dont want anyone to get hurt!

So is it possible to go away with a horse? For about 3 weeks

if its only for 3 weeks surely you could just pay to turn him out on grass livery somewhere with daily checks/ feeding or whatever?

Ditto the others, could you not put on full livery or if his old owners are local is there any chance they could have him back for 3wks if you pay his keep?

3 weeks? When people say travelling, I tend to assume 6 months +. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to take over for 3 weeks, although it will most likely cost you.

Well its not exactly a holiday when il be travelling around the country.. 3 weeks min as around the world flight is for this long...

I couldnt go for 6 months plus as i have him :/
Current yard would do full livery but moving to another yard that wouldnt.
Obviously i couldnt just leave him so could i get freelance person to do him?
Wouldnt want anyone riding him really so think hed be ok not ridden for 3 weeks..

Can anyone think of a way i could go for longer?

You can find good grass livery. I am sure he won't mind a few months off work. As long as you bring him back in to work slowly, then being turned away for a period of time will not do him any harm.

You need to put in the place the best possible provision for your horse whilst your away.

I would suggest staying at your current yard, and then having him on full livery whilst your away.

Ditto that. Unless you know someone you can rely on 100% to do him at your new yard...... If not, the only way around it is to hire a freelance groom. You don't seem very sure on how long you're away for though. Sort that out so you can then organise your horse.

I have worked abroad twice, once for 3mths and once or 6mths but I am lucky enough that my mum and sister ride and so could look after my horse(s) at the time (plus we have our own land/stables so livery wans't an issue).

3 weeks is no time at all and as others have said, just put him on full livery for that time or find somewhere he could go on grass livery. If you're wanting to go for longer then either find grass livery for this time - provided he's ok to live out and not be ridden - ie doesn't have significant health issues like laminitis etc. Horses in general don't care about having a break and not being ridden.

If you do know of anyone you trust to ride him in your absence though then that'd be the ideal.

As far as I am concerned, if you really want to go travelling and see the world for a bit then you definitely should and do it now, when you're young and are not tied down. If you don't you'll just end up regretting it!

You can hire freelance people to look after him, like pet sitters. You know your horse best - I'm sure most horses would be fine with a break in the field and no riding for a few weeks. You might just need to be a bit cautious in getting back on but the best person to decide about that is you.:)

A 3 week roadtrip sounds great, and the kind of thing you should do when the chance arises, before you are tied down by work and family and all that malarkey.

I managed to work abroad for 4 months last year and still keep my horse. I saved up enough money (approx. £1000) for him to be on full grass livery at a lovely farm. It was more expensive than just chucking him in a field but I knew he would be checked everyday, rugs changed etc. But in the end my old instructors horse was injured and she took Jango on full loan for that period which worked out great!

So full grass livery might be a good idea for you if your away for a long period of time, otherwise if its 3 weeks can't you just pay a friend at the yard? I know i'd be happy to an extra horse for a couple of weeks for a bit of extra cash :)

I thought he was on loan and you were struggling for money? I'm SO confused!

Anyways, speak to his owners and explain- they might rather he was in work, or prefer to find him a new loan home. If you can afford it, go travelling while you're young- as my sister told me, she wants to "get all the crazy stuff done before I'm too old and breakable" and I agree- if you can, go.

I left Big Pony for 3 1/2 weeks last year while I went and got spliced and honeymooned :D
I upgraded him from part to full livery at our yard and paid YO to ride him 3 times a week and had a friend take him out to 'play' twice too. He is anyone's ride though. I had been so stressed in the run up to the wedding that I really enjoyed the break from chores and didn't start to really miss him until the end however I have previously been on holiday for a week and pined for my Fluffy Monster!
Friend on yard has just come back from a 'gap year' and she put hers on loan in the meantime - he's a lovely horse but is very quirky so she did have to delay her departure until she found a suitable home.

YES! I did 4 months last year, I kept him at the current yad on DIY and a very kind generous friend at the yard mucked out and looked after for me, I let him down so he was not ridden, just turned out everyday. I am going away for 4 months again this summer but have to keep him ridden this year as he now has a touch of arthritis, so again the now VERY understanding friend is looking after again and I am enlisting a few VERY trustworthy friends to hack him so he is kept moving about 3 times a week as well as turnout.
Do it before you are too old! Though at 20 you have a good 9 years for working visas, Oz for eg stop at 30yrs old.
I have had my boy for 14 yras and will hopefully have him for another 14, I think a year or 2 is acceptable out of their hopefully long lives.

Have fun!

Thanks guys. My current ym would maybe do him.if i paid her and i trust her with him completely.. He'll only be down road from current yard. Or il have to get someone freelance in...

Lolo- i dont get why you felt the need to post that but fyi hes mine now-i bought him & everythings sorting out. I stated its not definitie im going-this for future reference!
