Reading a really interesting book (Budiansky's "The Nature of Horses" if anyone is interested in a nice Christmas presie) which mentions the archeological cost of horses:
- Hittite horse-training texts from 15th C BC mention the cost of training (per lap!) for matching pairs of chariot horses
- payroll lists from Mesopotamia, 18th C BC, show wages for horse buyers, trainers, grooms, stable hands
- the arrival of the horse in China in the 12th C BC and its feeding needs led to the importation of whole new crops of alfalfa for the entire country
Hasn't gotten any cheaper!
