Grrrrrrrrr, Pippa has lost her third shoe this week, a back one. Its so aggravating, but everytime she loses a shoe, her hooves get worse and worse. Can anyone recommend a supplement or course of action for this?
Thankyou

My friends TB is like this, we have been using a hoof disifectant on it over the last couple of months, and so far he has gone 4 weeks without pulling a shoe off!!!

Perhaps take the shoes off for a while if it's possible. Every time the shoe is lost then put back on it weakens the hoof wall more. If poss i'd take them off yes the hoof may break up a little but put her on a good supplement - farrier should be able to recommend and then the feet will begin to strengthen again. But thats just my opinion.

Barefoot priod if you can. Hoff cast if you cannot as this protects the wall from extra breakage and gives the farrier somehting solid to nail too thus helping keep the shoes on.

Hoof heal is the best topical product used only three times a wee is very concentrated and nourishing.

As far as suppliaments go i have found gelatin to be very good and of course anything with biotin in it

Try a good supplement such as "Hardy Hoof" and keep the hooves well moisturised. My welsh section d had similar problems and i have at last been able to improve her feet with this formula.

i use pro feet my horse is an id x and he used to go through a set a week so he went in a paddock by himseld so at least i could find the shoes the pro feet has made a big difference to his feet as he gets the powder and the ointment everyday

I used Hoofmaker on mine for a few months last year, it really helped improve his hooves. We also put Kevin Bacon hoof oil on. We now feed him Topspec comprehensive, and theres no need to use other suppliments with that, he hasnt lost a shoe in over a year now

Aran was the same and it was really upsetting me - I thought he was going to have to go barefoot but he'd have been really foot sore. My farrier recommended Formula 4 feet (cheapest from prequestrian - ebay!), keratex twice a week, kevin bacon daily and turnout and riding always with good over-reach boots on. Three weeks following this up to today he hasnt lost a shoe (including hunting and playing in the field). It's paid for itself as I don't need to get my farrier out to put shoes on or miss competitions etc!
Good luck - I know what you're going through!

even if god made a supplement, oil, farriers formula, biotin, or anything else, it would take time to help hoof quality.
so you already know the answer, no more nails untill new hoof grows, untill then, urithane, glue,or boots, think about it you have no hoof to nail to then you cant nail, that,s how simple it is. if you broke you,r leg you would know what to do, wait till it heals. you,r horse has lost hoof quality, and pieces are breaking off his feet. let him heal, it aint his fault.
