Certainly enthusiastic. We had a hunter years ago that you had to have absolutely ready before the wagon turned up. then you just opened the stable door and he galloped up the ramp and waited for the wagon to take him off to work. He absolutely loved his job.

The horse in my avatar would load himself in any open lorry and stand there saying "come on, shut the ramp, let's go eventing!".

He also jumped complete rounds if turned out in a field with show jumps in.

I had another horse who would try to refuse to turn into the yard at the end of a hack and carry straight on past up the road.

When my Little Madam was still in livery at the riding school she was often turned out on a relatively small grassy hill which opened directly on to the sand school. She would occasionally go for a jump to liven up her grazing. She also really liked to roll in the sand.
I think she now wants to be a cow pony. We met a herd of cows being moved down the road at the end off a hack and she started jogging to go towards the cows. Crazy pony.

Mine is a Happy Hacker.

Just that, nothing else. She's rising 11 and I can count on my two hands the number of times we've seen the inside of an arena since I took her on as a just-backed-and-riding-on 4yo. Ohh the shame!

She loves what she does. We have a lot of busy country lanes around us: agri-vehicles, a lorry firm just down the lane from us, and we have to cross over road bridges regularly. Ohh and we're in the flightpath of a regional airport too so we get stuff flying over low day & night.

My Grand Prix horse loved doing tempi changes — if you set him off doing them anywhere you had to actively stop him doing one times… he would do them in the field and if you turned across any diagonal at canter you had to all but lean out the side door to stop him - would do em on a hack too…

He would jump on the lorry to go out given half a chance too

B fuzzy would be a variation of a gamekeeper..... after she was spooked by a pheasant just after I got her going, I ended up teaching her to chase them, also to chase the deer that periodically come in my fields.
Friend got caught out when she borrowed B last winter and 2 deer popped up on a track in front of her, blooming pony snapped to attention and tried to beetle off at them. Friend v bemused as her horse checks out if she spotted deer 🤣🤣

Little A isnt allowed in the yard if the horsebox is open as she self loads and stamps her tiny feet to try and get moving!

Yeah I find some horses genuinely seem to love their job, most though I think are indifferent. My retired gelding was like that, he absolutely loved eventing and show jumping. He was always so keen, ears always pricked, just seemed to be so happy doing it. I still feel very guilty when I leave him in the field to take another horse to a competition, he does look a bit sad about it. Took him a while to settle into retirement too, he did struggle as he thrived on doing things.

We have an advanced mare on the yard who had a bit of time off through injury and when she was being loaded for her first SJ outing afterwards she literally squealed with excitement and bounced across the car park when she realised she was going on the lorry,

I think Ambers just damn nosey. On hacks, she always has to peer up drives ways and through gaps in the hedge. When I take her out on the trailer, she doesn't really settle until she's been unloaded and led around to see where she is and what's on. Then she's perfectly happy and very chill.

Our old pony lives for children. Couldn’t give a rats about adults. We pay two little girls to come and brush and fuss over her twice a week. She trots to the gate when they arrive. She taught so many kids to ride and took so many through Pony Club, she sees it as her job to delight small children.

Our retired eventer is a field terrorist if not kept engaged. Due to injury she cannot be ridden anymore but her rehab exercises and hand walking make her think she still has a job.

I would say most of my horses over the years seemed to genuinely enjoy hacking … once they get going, even the institutionalised show jumper who started off nappy af. Once they get the confidence to stride out they seem to really enjoy exploring new places. Not so sure on the rest of the “jobs” I asked of them .. but my current gelding just generally looks jolly all the time so I’ll have to gauge his special interests based on ruling out what he shows and active dislike to 😂 he’s just happy to be included in things I think 😂

My girl loves hunting (I think) she gets very excited when I start plaiting or washing her, and she self loads and then just stands there, ears pricked like ‘c’mon, what are you waiting for?’. One time I was out hacking and a horse lorry passed by. Yes, she bolted… after the lorry!

My horse absolutely loves being ridden and would go all day with whatever we are doing. Whether it's long forest hacks, jumping, even schooling in the arena she's so off the leg and enthusiastic.
She's an ex racehorse and doesn't have a lazy bone in her body 😍
