Its surprising how many peaople have horses these days and how we let them effect our lives.
Dont get me wrong i couldnt imagine not treating my horse like my baby (or my dog for that matter) but if we didnt maybe they wouldnt break our hearts so often.
I had a mare she was a chestnut tb and an ex race horse, Blucanoo or nann. So you can imagine what she was like.
She was my first proper horse and i doted on her, but we had our fair share. The main one being she had a kissing spine and after having her for 3 years she the operation she had two months box rest which was not easy ( she wasnt the best in the stable) the the insurance company decided not to pay they did a lengthy investigation but i was left with a £3500 vet bill!
After all this i decided to put her foal, she was a lovely girl really and i wanted to carry her on inth the future.
She went to stud, was covered and i brought her home before the 16day scan because i missed her too much.
Everything was going well untill two days after bringing her home she was kicked in the field.
I got to the yard to find someone leading her in from the field, well more hobbleing.
I imidietly called the vet who bandaged her up and gave her loads of drugs. She had a rough night the vet saw her first thing and decided she was not happy so she had to have xrays. The local surgury (2mins away) was not free then closed as it was a saturday so she had to travel in the trailer for a bout 30 miles to have the xrays at their main clinic.
They confirmed she had fractured her splint, it was nasty and might have to be operated on.
I could go into too much detail.
She came home after a few days on box rest with a massive bandage!
While on box rest she got to her 16 days, after all the trauma and drugs i didnt expest her to be in foal but she was!
Her leg healed fine and didnt need operating on.
Everything was fine she bloomed and started to get her baby belly.
Then at 8 months.
She had been kicked again! This time not too bad, it was deep but just pussy.
She was normaly on daily turnout but due to the bad weather we had agreed to turn the mares and geldings out on alternate days for a couple of weeks, using just one field.
But to stop her leg getting pussy and swollen i was allowed to turn her out in a different field on her days in.
I was the mares day in, so was using the other field,it was a really windy day but she was wrapped up warm. To keep her company my sister turned her gelding out with her.
I had just changed jobs so had worked a 12 hour night shift i went to the stbales mucked out and turned her out.
I went home to bed.
I was knackered so fell straight to sleep.
I 9 i got woken by the phone my mum answered, i heard her say " what , oh no"
I knew straight way something was wrong, she came into my room.
"kate, naans died shes had an accident"
My mum took me straight there she said it would propably best if i didnt go but i had to be sure.
She was in the field next to the tree
I lost her and her foal.
My sister had beem at the yard after me and was helping to clip a friends horse.
She had gone to the muck heap and had seen her gelding runnung around the field in a panic, she couldnt see naan so went to check and found her.
The vet was obviously called and had confirmed she had broken her neck.
The field was flat then had a slight slope and a tree at the top.
All we can asume is that they were playing and she ran up the slope and hit the tree head first, breaking her neck.
Atleat it was instant.
Two years on im still crying as i write this and i still havent been able to sort the photo album especialy of her and her foals progrees.
There is no moral to this story.
Just very said and it has left a huge scar, i miss her teribly.
Nann i miss you, why did this have to happen?
