The other week when i was leading Ronnie in from the field i noticed that his hips were making an odd clicking noise (sounds similar to electric fencing sparks but obv isn't!). He doesn't seem lame and happily puts weight on every one of his legs but sometimes it really is quite loud! I even hacked him out today with a friend and he seemed fine in both walk and trot. :s

I'm not sure if its always there or if i only hear it when i'm listening out for it but its definitely still lurking around, he's only 5 :(

Has anybody had any experiences of clicky hips? Is it worth getting a joint/vet/back person out to have a little look or shall i just leave it? I've started to get a little worried even though he seems fine in himself.

Thanks everyone x

My old mare's hips clicked from an early age - didn't seem to bother her at all. I think across the years I may have got the vet to check them out, but but he told me not to worry about it. She never had any lameness or impaired movement in her hips in 24 years.

If you are worried, just get them checked out - won't do any harm and might set your mind at rest. They might, of course, be clicking for an entirely different reason to my mare's.

Could be a load of things. My boy had a click that sounded quite deep in his hip, He started going intermittently lame. Eventually identified as a bone syste in the stifle. This was operated on in september. No click now.
