Doing some research about the muscle mass that you see in a lot of horses at the base of the Trapezius muscle / whither.

I tend to think you find it on horses that are in top level / advanced work but also in some breeds naturally such as Lusitano and some warmbloods ......

So what are your opinions ? do you know or own horses with this muscle mass? What breeds do you think it is found in naturally? or is it only developed through work/conditioning?

Any comments very much welcomed

Its in some breeds make up like you said, often those with their necks set higher up on the wither, like the lusitano and andalusians. However, a well developed trapezius is the sign of a horse schooling correctly, especially the thoracic part of the trapezius.

I confess that I have always been taught that a wider bulge at the base of the neck indicates that the horse is working through and correctly over the back.

I think I may have an article on it somewhere I shall have a look.

That would be great if you could find it, thanks alot. It is interesting - and i have found my boy have developed this muscle more recently so getting there slowly!
Thanks again
