Horses you've sold...

Do you keep in touch with the people who have bought them? I'm wondering whether this is a good plan. I've only ever sold one horse and I thought it was to his new forever home, only to find out today that they are probably selling him as they are changing jobs. He's only been with them 7 months, I really thought he had gone to them forever and now wish I hadn't kept in contact as I'm really sad to hear this! I understand everyone's circumstances change and I'm sure they'll find him a good home it's just he's so happy there he has a huge field and lots of friends!
 
didn't keep in touch with first pony and I regret it every day. Learnt from that and when I sold George a couple of weeks ago we made sure we could keep in touch. Went to see him last week for peace of mind that he is ok and we keep intouch with new owners. Will see hime about once a month(minimum) as he is only about 35 mins away
 
I've just sold my first ever buy to sell on pony and he's staying with me as a livery so couldn't have worked out better.

I'm not sure I would want to stay in touch otherwise I'd have to buy everything back if I thought they were in trouble. My own horses I keep for life and consider them differently.
 
Mmmm, tricky one really - from one side I can definately see how it would be nice to keep in touch and see how horse is getting on at new home, but I think you have to tread a fine line between 'keeping in touch' and 'getting involved' - I would find it very hard to watch if the new owners did something different from me, and at the end of the day, if it's no longer my horse I'm not in a position to comment!!! And if I was the new owner, whilst I wouldn't mind the occasional inquiry as to how it was all going, or being on hand for required info - I'd probably want the old owner to butt out.

Like I say, can see both sides..........
 
I still exchange Christmas cards with the owners of one horse I sold about 10 years ago and they put in a note about what they have been doing.

Another I sold about the same time I haven't ever heard from since they collected her, although I did hear it had all gone horribly wrong and believe the mare ended up finally back at her breeders as a broodmare.

The one I sold earlier this year has emailed once to say how much they love her and sent photos, but dont think they will get in touch again and so I wont either.


The other way round, even 12 years on I still send an update to the old owner/breeder about my bay mare (the one on the left in my siggy). We exchange Christmas cards and I always send her a photo and let her know what we have been up to (may not be such a cheery note this time since mare has developed ringbone!

Some I do, most I don't.

Catch 22 really, I am glad when I hear that all is well, but if I heard a horse was having a hard time of things there would be nothing I could do about it, so, in a cowardly lion fashion, I'd rather not know at all.
 
We try to keep in touch with all the people who buy our youngstock.We have one at the moment jumping in America and it is on my to do list to contact them and a three year old has just gone to an event rider in the UK and she has been keeping me up to date on his progress.We do have prefix's on all our horses so it is a bit easier to find where they are and what they are doing.Even though we have bred quite a few over the last few years I still love to hear how they are getting on and what they are up to.

I make the effort to keep in touch, but it seems to be me that does it mostly, i would like to hear more about her than i do, but then i did have her for 4 years and still love her to bits and think about her every day and miss her terribly

3 of them I've tried tracing but no luck, 2 of them I know where they are and I can see them whenever I want. The last one I sold this year was a heartbreaking sale and his new owner promised to keep in touch with me but after a few months I enquired to see how he was settling in I got no response. Even when I forwarded on his paperwork I got no response so I don't know how he is.
 
Had a loan pony, who after 2 years with us as a lead rein pony for my daughter, had to return to her owners as she had a fear of traffic and it wasn't improving so became unsafe. She has gone out on loan again and I was promised I'd have a note to tell me how she is, but as yet, 5 months later I have heard nothing.
My first pony we sold in 1986, and kept in touch every year - we still do although the pony was PTS last year.
The second pony I sold in 1994, within a year she was sold on again, and then after 2 more years we heard she became 'unrideable', so we found out her owners and asked to have her back on loan. We still have her and she will be here to her last day.
Selling horses, particually those you are very attached to is heart breaking and I would love to hear from all the owners. I would if I had brought a horse - I think its a very nice gesture.
 
I sold my lovely big horse Rocky to a friend of mine who I kept in contact with for a few years after. He let me go and ride him a few times and we met regularly. I then moved away to lincolnshire and lost contact and during that time I found out he's sold him to the states for rather a lot of money.
Funnily enough the fact that he wasn't even in the same country anymore really upset me.
I was thinking about him today and got a bit tearful and it was 12 years ago I sold him. He was my horse of a lifetime but I didn't realise what a superstar he was at the time.
 
I am still in touch with Merlins old owner, and had to brake the saddest news to her....he was her's for 11 years before I had him, so she'd had him from a foal...personally I dont think I could keep intouch with them....I would want to keep checking them all the time....and prob want them back!

Never sold a horse, but I am in contact with both breeders (and only previous owners) of my horses - Frodo's breeders are always in touch via email, we've just sent them a video of his first show and they were delighted! With Rauti it's more occasional as his breeders aren't the most technological people (old farmers in the middle of nowhere in south east Germany!) and don't have the internet. But we do send them Christmas cards or gifts and still try and visit them maybe once every two years (actually, it was during one such visit that we ended up buying Rauti's half brother

My mam keeps in contact with the owner of my first horse & tells me nice bits
Another horse i sold kept in contact with the person but they sold him on and since then i have heard the new owners are struggling with him

not sure who they are though.

In one way it's nice to know how there doing but in another way i would rather not.
 
I am good friends with the lady I "sold" my section a to. And we regularly talk. I did loose contact with Sidneys old owner and managed to track her down through facebook, where I had to give her the news of Sid's passing.
