Hi everyone,
my 21 year old thoroughbred mare has always had really good hooves, in a strong and solid condition (she has biotin added to her meals which helps). However I have found that starting from August her shoes have only lasted 4 weeks, 5 at a push .
They usually last perfectly, no looseness etc for 6-7 weeks so we are wondering what could be wrong. Or is this just normal for Summer? it hasn't happened before. I bought her in aug 09 and she had 4 shoes, but she did have a period of time being barefoot october 09-april 10 and was perfectly fine. since then she's always had the 4 shoes on.
They came loose last week which was only just the 4th week of having them. Is this normal?
She has extra nails in her back hooves for hacking etc.
She is ridden a 3 times a week, sometimes 4, with days off inbetween.
We are getting the farrier out this week. Does anyone else have this problem?sorry if its a silly question just a bit bemused really! xx
