Does anyone else wonder if horses get bored on horsewalkers? Especially when they are left on there for a long time and when they can't see out very well? Or do you think they enjoy it?
i dont think its a good idea for a horse to be on a walker for a long period of time full stop tbh i wud only use one if i really had to for short periods. i doubt horses particulary enjoy being forced to walk round and round one way in and endless circles and getting electricuted if they stop, just my opinion

Then to be honest, you could say this about a myriad of things we make them do. Some horses hate schooling, perhaps they see this as going round and round in endless circles?? Haha.
My mare goes on the walker regularly, although its difficult to tell if she 'enjoys' it, she certainly doesn't seem to hate it.
Oh and just to mention, our walker doesnt even have electric (its old) and the horses still go round.
yes but, and agin in my humble opinion (and im saying this relating to my horses obv all are different) that going round, and round , and round , and round and yes uv guessed it round again in walk, bending one way getting volts up ur bum wen u stop (and many are electified) is not comparable to a varied and interesting schooling session - unless of course wen u school ur horse u walk it round, and round and round and round one way in walk for half an hour?i think not....
im not saying walkers dont have their place im just replying to OP
No, but there are some horses that dislike schooling (no matter how varied) compaired to other things involved in their work schedule. We've never had electric on our walker, but i have been at yards where there was. And i have always seen it turned off, must just be that ive always seen willing horses!
Im sure there are horses that get bored, as others do with different things. In the end i think walkers are fine as long as they are used properly, as with so many things in the horse world.
Wouldnt be without ours . Horses on for no more than 15mins in am and 15 mins pm.It gives them a stretch after breakfast and begins to loosen them up before they start work. As for being bored ours attack the rubber dividers an appear to get amusment this way .
Ifeel if they objected to the walker they would try to evade going in that doesnt happen
Many walkers *can* be electrified but the vast majority of the time this wont be used- it's only used if a horse is really pushing it's luck.
My two positively love the walker but then they are freaks and most of ours find it all rather beneath them!!
i think they get very bored if they can't see out. however, my walker at my old place had fencing at chest height and was outside, so they could have a good look round. they were perfectly happy on it. for stabled horses, it's got to be less boring than standing in a stable.
fwiw i found that geldings were the ones who got bored and tried to stop it, while mares were happy to walk round on it for ages.
Prefer to use all year turn out!My boy used to live in at night up untill 3years ago(stressed his weight off),he now lives out and loves it(full tb),he keeps himself fit without the use of a walker!!
(he now keeps weight on and is soooooooooooooooo not stressed out!If i asked him to walk round in circles on a walker he would think i had gone mad, lol)xx
