I am in the middle of trying to make up my own first aid kit and need a bit of HHO inspiration!

What do you think every horse owner should keep handy?

And what is not essential but comes in useful sometimes?

Finally, where do you buy your components from?

Gosh I have loads in mine.

Animalintex, scissors, vetwrap, gamgee, cotton wool, iodene spray, antiseptic spray, wound powder, dettol, plasters, ice pack, heat pack, thermomiter, wound powder, dressing pads.

Also have other bits, antiseptic cream, disposable gloves, dermasalve (*sp), aloe vera gel, leg ice, bute, painkillers, medical tape, first aid spray, arnica gel, deep heat, deep freeze, savlon. Probably some other bits but cant remember off the top of my head. All stored in a mouse proof box

I get bits and bobs from tack shops, but Robinsons should have all the basics. I also get quite a few bits from Wilkinsons or the supermarket like anticeptic sprays etc. Oh and I got my ice packs from Supersavers for £1 - they are about £5 from tack shops.

Mine is rather empty at the moment.

Have:

Hibiscrub
Sterile Saline
Sterile Swabs
4 x Bandages (self adhesive)
Gamgee
Savlon Disinfectant
Sudocrem
Keratex
Scissors
Vaseline

Bought some of mine from Boots and the Keratex, Gamgee, bandages, hibiscrub from local tack shop. Quite fortuante in that if there is any out of date equipment from work I am able to take it as it is still safe for use on horse. Doesnt happen often however lol

Mine is quite ridiculous tbh

I have:-

Gamgee (tons of this as i found out first hand how much is required to REALLY wrap a leg)

Melanin in varying sizes. Have three boxes of the largest and a few boxes of the smaller ones

Charcoal dressings - love these

Cotton wool - Reams and reams of it on large rolls.

Hibiscrub - Use for most things

Anti septic wipes - Incase you need to inject and also for cleaning hands fast

Spray on disinfectants - Useful for pumping into a wound if you dont have syringes! Or on something that wont stand still

Blu Hors Hoof Disinfectant - Amazing stuff for feet

Purple Spray for Feet - Again, for thrush

Purple Spray for Cuts (good as a reminder of where they are or if someone else needs to see to the horse)

Cleans needles and syringes (of varying sizes).

Bute

Vet wrap bandages - generally keep about 12 of these

Another bandage that i cant remember the name of... its a thicker fluffier material in bandage form used as additional support. Have about 5 rolls of that

Stable Bandages - Purely for the first aid kit

Under bandage wraps - have two types... some very very padded ones that look like polypad material and some thinner cotton ones for stable bandages

Elasticated bandages

Tail Bandages - Sometimes you need the tail out of the way like now..

Tubigrip

Intrasite gel - keep tons of this stuff as i use it like crazy

Sudacrem - for general cuts and nicks

Dermobian - yep! still have quite a lot! :P

Antiseptic fly cream - useful in summer particularly

Aloe Vera Gel

Arnica Gel - Good for Bruising

Factor 45 Sun Cream

Vaseline

Plasters - Equine versions obviously

Strong heavy duty tape - useful for poltices

Ice packs

Animalintex

Leg Ice clay

Sharp rounded Scissors

A knife

Box of latex gloves

Epsom Salts

General salt - Often under estimated
